A full-time Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in support of the Center for Watershed Research & Service (CWRS) and Engineering programs at Saint Francis University.  The position will entail:

  • Research in support of the faculty and mission of CWRS (http://francis.edu/center-for-watershed-research-and-service/). Existing research programs are interdisciplinary and include:
    • Co-treatment of municipal wastewater and acid mine drainage
    • Limiting nutrient runoff from agricultural practices
    • Treatment of contaminants of emerging concern
    • Wastewater management and treatment from oil and gas development
    • Sustainable passive treatment of acid mine drainage
    • Other Ecological Engineering solutions for water quality improvement

 

  • Teaching one course per semester related to environmental engineering with our unique approach of real research and service blended into the classroom.

 

  • Other related activities:
    • Extension work in service of regional watershed restoration/protection nonprofit organizations
    • Authoring peer-reviewed manuscripts and presenting at national/international conferences
    • Mentoring undergraduate interns and researchers
    • Grant-writing in support of CWRS

The balance of the aforementioned activities will be tailored to skill set of the successful applicant.  They will be overseen and closely mentored by Drs. Travis Tasker, Joel Bandstra, and Rachel Wagner to achieve the research, teaching, extension, and grant-writing productivity necessary for maximal professional development.

This opportunity is open to applicants from all relevant engineering and science disciplines. We especially encourage applications from those with backgrounds in ecological, environmental, and biological engineering as well as environmental chemistry/science/microbiology, applied ecology, hydrology, biogeochemistry, and other related fields.

Saint Francis University was founded in 1847 and is the oldest Franciscan institute of higher learning in the United States.  A small Catholic liberal arts university set in the Laurel Highlands of central PA, opportunities for outdoor recreation abound (kayaking, hiking, sailing, mountain-biking, fishing, etc.).  The University is located in the village of Loretto, which is 1 hour East of Pittsburgh and 3-4 hours West of Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia.

CWRS was founded in 2012 with funding from the Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds.  Its mission is to provide expert assistance and manpower to amplify the watershed restoration efforts of domestic and international nonprofit organizations and to advance the science of watershed restoration.
