Director of the Black Cultural Center
Virginia Tech, a public land-grant university, pushes the boundaries of knowledge by taking a hands-on, increasingly transdisciplinary approach to preparing students to be leaders and problem solvers. As the Commonwealth's most comprehensive university and its leading research institution, Virginia Tech offers more than 280 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 34,000 students and manages a research portfolio of $521 million. The University fulfills its land-grant mission of transforming knowledge to practice through technological leadership and by fueling economic growth and job creation locally, regionally, and across Virginia.
Building on its motto, Virginia Tech is dedicated to InclusiveVT, the institutional and individual commitment to Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence. The University seeks candidates who adopt and practice the Principles of Community, which are fundamental to the institution's ongoing efforts to increase access and inclusion, and to create a community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. Virginia Tech actively seeks a broad spectrum of qualified candidates and encourages individuals across racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and other identities to apply.
The Black Cultural Center, founded in 1991, is one of five centers constituting the Cultural and Community Centers (CCCs) – the BCC, El Centro (Latinx center), the Asian Cultural Engagement Center, the LGBTQ+ Resource Center, and the American Indian and Indigenous Community Center. The directors of the CCCs, along with the directors of the Intercultural Engagement Center and the Ujima Living Learning Community, constitute a cohesive team committed to supporting one another and the communities they serve, and to highlighting intersecting experiences and identities. The directors and their centers and programs are integral to the student-facing efforts of the Office for Inclusion and Diversity.
Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for Inclusion and Diversity, the Director of the Black Cultural Center supports the university's diversity and inclusion efforts by developing programs, events, and services that facilitate the personal, social, academic, and cultural wellbeing of students, faculty, and staff at Virginia Tech. The director is responsible for referencing information relevant to campus, regional and national data on conditions affecting the Black community, using this information to inform and educate the campus community about issues, and taking appropriate and responsible actions consistent with advocacy and support of a welcoming and affirming campus community for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, alumni and community members. The Director of the Black Cultural Center will work in partnership with Housing and Residence Life and the Africana Studies Program to support the Ujima Living Learning Community and will pursue substantial collaboration with the Ujima Director.
