The NKU College of Education (CoE) is committed to academic excellence, research-supported practice, and diverse, equitable, and inclusive teaching and learning environments. The college prides itself on a history of successful collaborative relationships with schools, school districts, educational agencies, and government entities. Driven by the most current research and utilizing its extensive knowledge base of best practices, the CoE continually seeks to meet the needs of the region.
The Department of Educational Leadership and Advanced Studies ( ELAS ) is one of two newly formed departments in the College of Education. The focus of the ELAS department is on advanced graduate studies in educator and leadership development. The programs include a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.), Education Specialist in Education Leadership (Ed.S.) including supervisor, principal, and superintendent certifications, and a Master of Arts in Education – Teacher as Leader (MA.Ed).
The Department of Educational Leadership and Advanced Studies is accepting applications for the position of Department Chair. The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Education and will be responsible for course assignments, instructional workload, and scheduling; personnel considerations regarding hiring of staff and faculty; review procedures associated with reappointment, promotion, tenure, and post tenure; shared governance; faculty and staff mentoring, supervision and development; budgeting; strategic planning; providing leadership for CAEP and SACS accreditation; and curriculum and program development. Candidates should possess listening and communication skills that foster open and positive dialogue among faculty, staff, and students, and cultivate a collegial environment. The four-year administrative term (with possibility of renewal) begins July 1, 2021. The department chair’s teaching responsibilities will typically not exceed 6 credit hours during the 12-month appointment.
The following are required qualifications:
• Earned doctorate in education from an accredited institution.
• Evidence of inspired, creative, and aspirational leadership.
• Distinguished record of college-level teaching, scholarship and service.
• Substantive commitment and demonstrated contributions toward diversity, equity, inclusion, cultural competency and anti-racism.
• Evidence of effective collaboration within the college, across campus, and in the community.
• Eligible to qualify for tenure and rank of associate or full professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Advanced Studies based on Northern Kentucky University’s Promotion and Tenure guidelines.
The following are preferred qualifications:
• Previous successful experience as a P-12 teacher and/or leader.
• The ability to support interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and teaching.
• Experience with faculty development and mentoring.
• Involvement with supporting and maintaining accreditation (i.e., CAEP, SACS ).
• Experience using administrative, managerial, and financial best practices.
• A demonstrated commitment to graduate education.
