The Department of Teacher Preparation and Educational Studies ( TPES ) is one of two newly formed departments in the College of Education. The focus of the TPES department is initial certification teacher preparation and non-certification educational programs. The programs include early childhood education (certification and non-certification), elementary education, middle grades education, secondary education, special education, Master of Arts in Teaching ( MAT ), and a recently approved non-certification educational studies degree. While the TPES department is a distinct academic unit, the faculty and staff work closely with, and teach courses in, the Department of Educational Leadership and Advanced Studies; therefore, collaboration across departments is of paramount importance.

Primary Responsibilities

The Department of Teacher Preparation and Educational Studies is accepting applications for the position of Department Chair. The department chair reports to the Dean of the College of Education. The chair is responsible for course assignments, instructional workload, and scheduling; personnel considerations regarding hiring of staff and faculty; review procedures including reappointment, promotion, and tenure, annual performance review, and post tenure; shared governance; faculty mentoring; staff supervision and development; budgeting; strategic planning; providing leadership for CAEP and SACS accreditation; and curriculum and program development. The department chair’s teaching responsibilities will typically not exceed 6 credit hours per year. The four-year administrative term, with possibility of renewal, begins July 1, 2021.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:
• Earned doctorate in education from an accredited institution.
• Eligible to qualify for tenure and rank of associate professor or higher in the Department of Teacher Preparation and Educational Studies based on Northern Kentucky University’s Promotion and Tenure guidelines.
• Distinguished record of college-level teaching, scholarship, and service.
• Demonstrated commitment and contributions towards cultural competency related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or anti-racist discourse.
• Experience with pre-service and in-service teacher preparation.
• Documented success as a collaborative leader.
• Record of successful P-12 teaching experience.

Preferred qualifications:
• Collaborates effectively within the college, across campus, and in the community.
• Outstanding listening and communication skills to effectively foster open and positive dialogue among faculty, staff, and students.
• Commitment to cultivating a collegial environment among faculty and staff.
• Experience developing and maintaining partnerships with schools and community agencies.
• Ability to advocate for the department to multiple constituencies and promote strategic priorities.
• Experience with faculty development and mentoring.
• Involvement with supporting and maintaining accreditation (i.e., CAEP, SACS ).
• Experience with grant writing and management, fundraising, and development.
• Experience using administrative, managerial, and financial best practices.
