About the College/Unit/Department

UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant provides research, education, training and science-based outreach to assist Georgia in solving problems and realizing opportunities for its coastal and marine environments. By advancing research, education and training, and outreach, UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant promotes the economic, cultural and environmental health of Georgia’s coast and prepare citizens to become good stewards of coastal ecosystems and watershed resources.

UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant is a unit of Public Service and Outreach at the University of Georgia, supporting Georgia’s short- and long-term prosperity.

UGA Marine Extension serves a diverse coastal constituency and educates citizens about Georgia’s marine resources and the importance of being good environmental stewards. It provides assistance to marine industries by finding ways to increase their efficiency and effectiveness and encourages the development of new, environmentally sustainable industries.

The Georgia Sea Grant College Program is part of a national network of 34 Sea Grant programs located in every coastal and Great Lakes state, Puerto Rico, Lake Champlain, and Guam. These programs serve as a core of a dynamic university-based network of over 300 institutions involving more than 3,000 scientists, engineers, educators, students and outreach experts.

The network engages with academia and a wide variety of partners to address issues related to the coasts, oceans and marine resources. Sea Grant is a program of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ) within the U.S.

Position Summary

The University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant program seeks an individual to serve as a liaison between the National Sea Grant program and SERPPAS and to work with military bases and their surrounding communities on implementing coastal resilience measures. The liaison is expected to develop a comprehensive research and outreach program that facilitates the transfer of information, tools, and resources between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ), the National Sea Grant program, and military installations in and adjacent to U.S. coastal areas. The program will leverage Sea Grant’s significant stakeholder engagement and coastal community resilience expertise with the compatible land use planning, conservation and coastal resiliency efforts occurring on and around military installations to advance the sustainability of coastal communities, ecosystems and military readiness. The liaison will also transfer findings and impacts of specific research and outreach projects across the national Sea Grant network to encourage greater collaborative coastal resilience efforts between military facilities and coastal communities beyond the SERPPAS geographic region.
This is a full time, benefits eligible, non-tenured Public Service Faculty track position with five years of initial funding secured. This position is based in Athens, Georgia with travel to other regional and national locations required to ensure the most critical needs of the program are met. Alternative work location can be considered.

Additional Requirements

An M.S. degree related to climate change science is required. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field is acceptable for a Public Service Provisional appointment. This provisional faculty classification is offered for no more than three years without review. You may apply for a regular service faculty appointment upon completion of an advanced degree or successful progression through the public service promotion process. Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

•PhD or terminal degree in a related field.
•At least one year of experience in extension and outreach programs or with military installations.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

•A understanding of resilience and sustainability related to climate change science is preferred.
•Training in natural resource and environmental sciences, and fundamental knowledge of climate impacts and resilience issues.
•Demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding and lead applied research efforts.
•Ability to work in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment and develop productive partnerships and collaborations with diverse populations.
•Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
•Capacity to conduct community-engaged scholarship with diverse audiences through research and outreach activities.
•Strong ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, particularly as it pertains to interpreting and translating research-based technical information for the understanding and use by decision makers, practitioners, and the general public.

• Conduct research necessary (document review, structured interviews, and focus groups) to identify relevant tools and resources among the partners;
• Identify information, resources and research gaps related to assisting coastal communities in implementing resiliency measures and natural infrastructure projects adjacent to military installations;
• Understand partner strategic priorities and identify approaches and best practices for Sea Grant professionals to engage with military installations in collaboration with the surrounding communities; including how Federal, State and local programs can be leveraged for building resilience at a local level.
• Leverage partnerships in order to successfully develop training modules and presentation materials to expand programs across the region and country;
• Work collaboratively with Sea Grant programs and extension professionals to connect with communities and adjacent installations, with the goal of identifying pilot projects to serve as demonstrations; specific focus on how installation and community resilience planning can be integrated to identify shovel-ready projects.
• Identify and communicate to the Department of Defense, using information gathered from Sea Grant programs and professionals, needs, challenges and opportunities related to community engagement efforts with military installations.
• Similarly, the Liaison should promote and disseminate the Department of Defense-related research and outreach opportunities and needs identified to be included in Sea Grant programs research portfolios
• Disseminate knowledge to Sea Grant professionals on best practices for engagement with military installations and their surrounding communities.
• Evaluate efforts on an on-going basis and disseminate findings in annual reports to the liaison advisory committee, SERPPAS Coastal Resilience & Regional Adaptation work group and the sea grant network;
• Secure and manage extramural funding to support pilot projects, research and extension initiatives.
• Represent Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, SERPPAS, and the Sea Grant network at community events, professional meetings, collaborative working groups or advisory committees and partnerships with other organizations.
