The department invites applications for one faculty position in public health nutrition with areas of expertise in areas such as public health nutrition, foodsystems, nutrition epidemiology. The successful applicant will have a focus on teaching excellence in both the traditional and online environments. Faculty members are expected to maintain scholarly activity as well as participate in service activities at the program, department, college, university, profession, and community levels. Responsibilities include advising, coaching, and mentoring students. Special consideration will be given to candidates who have the Registered Dietitian credential, experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, and have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion to improve access to higher education for under-represented groups.

Description of the Department or Unit

The Department of Nutrition and Health Care Management has 21 full-time faculty and approximately 600 undergraduate and graduate students. The Department, created as part of the new Beaver College of Health Sciences which began in 2010, has grown significantly in enrollment. The Nutrition and Foods programs have doubled since that time. These include an undergraduate Didactic Program in Dietetics, a combined Dietetic Internship/MS Nutrition Program, and online graduate programs in Public Health Nutrition including master’s and certificate programs. The Public Health Nutrition concentration curriculum is aligned with competencies defined by the World Public Health Nutrition Association and the Association of Graduate Programs in Public Health Nutrition. The undergraduate program also includes concentrations in Nutrition and Wellness, an accelerated admissions track for the Master’s program in Public Health Nutrition, and Food Systems Management. Both the undergraduate dietetics program and the dietetic internship are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics ( ACEND ). The Beaver College of Health Sciences ( BCHS ) is celebrating its 10th year as a college, and it is the second largest college at Appalachian State University with over 3,700 students served by 150 faculty and staff. Committed to interprofessional innovation and collaboration in teaching, scholarship, service and clinical outreach, the BCHS is transforming the health and quality of life for the communities we serve. In 2018, the College expanded to include the Holmes Convocation Center and Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, a new, state-of-the-art 203,000 square foot facility that is the cornerstone of the Wellness District. In addition, the college is home to the Blue Cross NC Institute for Health and Human Services and has a collaborative partnership with the Wake Forest School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant Program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Primary instructional duties may include introduction to public health nutrition, lifecycle nutrition for public health nutritionists, nutritional epidemiology, supervising capstone projects and mentoring students at the graduate level. Successful applicants will have a focus on teaching excellence in both the traditional and online environments. Faculty members are expected to maintain scholarly activity as well as participate in service activities at the program, department, college, university, profession, and community levels.
