Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Perinatal Access Program Health Access Coordinator receives referrals from community health providers, VCUHS Women’s Health maternity clinic, social workers, VCUHS billing department, and pregnant patients directly contacting VCUHS .

Screen pregnant patients for Emergency Medicaid eligibility, complete the Medicaid applications, submit them to the local Departments of Social Services and follow up with the agencies to assure the applications are processed correctly. Provide Medicaid applications’ approvals to VCUHS billing department.

Provide tours of VCUHS labor and delivery, provide breastfeeding information, serve as bilingual Spanish/English interpreter and translator. Advocates for patients during challenging situations, such as unpaid bills sent to collections, applications for social security disability benefits, obtain birth certificates and social security cards, direct patients to services for domestic violence, perinatal loss, child developmental delay, child support enforcement, etc.

Supports the mission and goals of VCU and the VCU Health System by listening to and anticipating customer needs, providing clear explanations, responding quickly, taking initiative to assist internal and external customers, appreciate diversity, respect differences, while always observing confidentiality.

Minimum Hiring Standards

Excellent communication skills.
Proficiency in Spanish both, oral and written communication.
Experience performing community outreach. Knowledge and understanding of the particular needs and challenges of patients. Skill in the use of personal computers, the ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
Knowledge of available patient support programs, agencies, and services.
Analytical and problem-solving skills.
Case management and advocacy skills.
Ability to multi-task and develop creative solutions.
Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
Ability to communicate complex information in a manner easily understood by patients. Exemplify the University’s educational mission, strategic aims, and programs. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member of VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

Knowledge of Emergency Medicaid application guidelines and Virginia Manual policy preferred.
Previous employment or volunteer work in human services, community agencies, or related non-profit or social change organization is a plus.
Hospital and community experience preferred.
