Position Summary

The Non-Credit Instructor, Upward Bound (UB) is responsible for providing engaging and empowering academic instruction to program participants (grades 9-12) during the annual Upward Bound Summer Enrichment Institute (SEI). All courses are geared towards generating excitement for learning by introducing next school year’s curriculum and academic skills. Each course should incorporate one overarching project. Students may work in groups or individually on the class project and the projects will be presented at the end of the program. Coursework should be based on culturally responsive pedagogy and multicultural perspectives. The SEI Program’s subjects include Wellness, Project Based Learning, English A (Level I & II), English B (Level III & IV), Spanish, French, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math I (Algebra), Math II (Geometry), Math III (Algebra II), Math IV (Pre-Calculus), and Self-Development.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

INSTRUCTION & PROGRAM SUPPORT

Provides effective instruction to high school students in a virtual classroom format during the designated work schedule. Develops curriculum and materials
for assigned course(s). Participate in an orientation session and meetings as scheduled. Prepares, develops and proctors one pre-test and one post-test for
assigned course(s). Completes and maintains required reports (i.e., class attendance, supply lists, course syllabus, pre- and post-test results, final grades, etc.) and submits by the given due date. Adhere to established TRIO policies and procedures.

CUSTOMER SERVICE & CLASSROOM SUPPORT

Participate in out-of-class activities/events with students and parents as agreed upon with the Upward Bound Program Manager. Maintains continual contact with students, and maintains good relations with Upward Bound partners, participants and others. Models professional behavior with participants, parents, and staff. Handles disruptive behavior with respect, follows guidelines, processes and procedures, and reports any issues to Program Manager. Monitors participant participation and attendance.

Attends all required department meetings and trainings. Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required. Other duties as required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee regularly sits, stands and walks for extended periods of time. Employee converses verbally with others in person and by telephone. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen. Employee occasionally lifts or exerts force of up to 10 pounds when moving files, boxes and other materials.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical office/academic environment. Regular exposure to moderate noise typical to business offices. May travel to various Columbus State campuses and sites.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: mastery level of student learning theory; delivering student instruction; communication and computer; organizing and coordinating training programs.

Skilled in: communication, verbal, non-verbal and written: ensures understanding, adjusting to audience; maintaining the audience attention; present in logical manner and summarize information to audience; defining clear goals.

Ability to: focus on the student; educate and understand student's needs and concerns; follow a logical sequence; use learning aids build collaborative relationships; develop and maintain good working relationships with associates, supervisors, job contacts and general public; maintain confidential and sensitive information.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED with at least one (1) year of experience. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s). An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.
