Faculty - Assistant Professor - Ballet

Summary:
Utah Valley University's Department of Dance invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in the Ballet Program, beginning Fall 2020. The mission of the Department of Dance is to foster academic and artistic excellence through an intensive technical and reflective study of dance. Anchored in a common core curriculum, with several areas of emphasis, our program provides a rich and stimulating environment where students cultivate their technical, aesthetic, creative and scholarly potential. We value experience with a variety of teaching methods and/or curricular perspectives that engage students and which promote dance as an artistic and cultural expression with the power to enrich and transform the individual, community, and society.
Position Overview
The primary professional responsibilities of this instructional faculty member are to teach undergraduate-level courses in all levels of ballet technique (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) based on sound anatomical and wellness principles coupled with a value of diverse aesthetics. Other duties could include teaching dance composition, pointe, men's class, classical variations, repertoire, partnering as well as choreographing for dance concerts. In addition, the person in this position will be expected to participate in advising students; engage in active peer-reviewed creative/scholarly activities; participate in department, college, university, and system-wide service including participation in dance auditions and recruitment; maintain office hours, and work collaboratively and productively with colleagues. Positive tenure and promotion decisions require excellent teaching; a record of peer-reviewed creative/scholarly activity in the discipline; and strong leadership contributions to school, college and university committees and to external professional organizations that serve the broader discipline's communities.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation with an MFA from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. Normally will have produced creative work, professional writing or research in refereed and other professional journals. Must have experience assessing student learning capabilities and learning styles and understand how to develop curriculum of assigned courses.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of recruitment, advisement, and placement.
Skill in mentoring and advising students.
Skill in assessing student talents.
Skill in directing student performance groups and mentoring student choreography.
Skill in grant writing and administrative skills highly desirable.
Experience in re-staging choreography.
Ability to design and teach courses in all levels of Ballet Technique and Theory, Pointe or Men’s Class, and Pas de Deux.
Ability to design curriculum and teach courses in at least two of the following areas: Ballet Pedagogy, Choreography, Character or courses from the core curriculum.

Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a terminal degree in Dance or a related field. Evidence of professional experience in the dance field. Evidence of successful college-level teaching or other professional settings in all levels of ballet technique using sound anatomical and wellness principles. Evidence of the ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarship, and service. Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues and communities. Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in teaching diverse student populations, including first‐generation and non-traditional college students


Physical Requirements:
Work is normally performed in a typical classroom/office work environment.
