The Communications Specialist is directly responsible for the creation and implementation of a comprehensive communications program, developing best practices and processes for the Student Activities Office in support of its vision and strategic plan. This position works collaboratively with colleagues across the Student Activities Office (SAO), the Student Development Team, and Student Affairs to enhance the reputation of and build awareness for the SAO brand, programs, buildings, services, support, and resources to students and other key stakeholders. The Communications Specialist reports to the Director of Student Centers, Activities and Events, and is responsible for promotional materials across print, web, social media, and digital signage platforms, overseeing a team of 3-4 student employees who assist in the execution of graphic design and event promotion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Oversee ongoing stewardship of SAO and related web sites, social media, and other existing promotional channels; Work closely with SAO colleagues in development, delivery, and assessment of promotional materials for programs, buildings, services, support, and resources to students and other key stakeholders; Advise colleagues regarding best practices in communications and marketing.

2) Develop communications goals and measurable outcomes for SAO; Assess effectiveness of marketing initiatives through metrics; Continually assess new and emerging communication channels for compatibility with needs of both students and the student activities/union field; Conduct research on website analytics and stay up to date on recent trends in social media; Research other Universities and organizations to develop best practices on web site utilization, social media usage, and various other online resources; Provide recommendations to the Director of Students Centers, Activities and Events.

3) Create and oversee systems for reception and posting of student group and department marketing materials on video boards in Duncan Student Center and LaFortune Student Center; Review promotional modules in SAO360 software tool for approval of student event promotional materials from over 500 recognized student clubs and organizations.

4) Recruit, select, and hire 3-4 student employees to support department's communications and marketing events, including graphic design, videography and/or event promotion; Produce own design work and/or contract with freelance designers for larger scale projects on an as-needed basis.

5) Develop and maintain strong working relationship with Student Affairs Communications Program Director and serve as an active member of Division Communicators group; Work to ensure SAO communications are in keeping with both Divisional and University branding standards; Represent SAO on relevant Divisional and University Committees and working groups as necessary.

6) Participate as integral member of a large, multifaceted Student Development team interacting daily with colleagues in the Gender Relations Center, Multicultural Student Programs and Services, Office of Student Enrichment, Office of Community Standards, RecSports, University Bands, Family Resource Center, and student media groups; Support various administrative responsibilities of the main office and other parts of the 20 person SAO staff team as necessary; Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree; preferred candidates will have a master’s degree, ideally in communications, marketing, higher education administration, or a related area. Qualifications include advanced understanding of personal computers (including desktop publishing, Google docs, and the Adobe suite), strong organizational skills and the knowledge of and desire to develop cutting edge leadership, communication, and marketing materials. Additional qualifications include exceptional communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with a diverse group that includes students, staff, faculty and the public. The successful candidate will also possess a commitment to fostering Judeo-Christian values, consistent with the mission of a Catholic university founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross.
