Chief Digital Research Officer (CDRO)

Great Minds. One Goal. Canada’s Success.

The NRC values diversity in its workforce and encourages candidates to self-identify as members of the following designated groups: women, visible minorities, aboriginal peoples and persons with disabilities. Measures for accommodation are available to all candidates retained for further assessment.

To retain the best candidate, the NRC may use interchange, secondment, or alternate programs for this hiring.

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) is the Government of Canada's largest science and research organization.

The NRC partners with Canadian academia, industry and other governmental organisations to take research impacts from the lab to the marketplace, to the benefit of Canadians.

The NRC is seeking a senior research executive to fulfil the role of Chief Digital Research Officer to lead the Digital Technologies Research Centre and make up the ranks of its senior management team.

Digital technology is the vanguard of innovation and the driver of real-world transformation that impacts society in incredible ways as a force for good. The National Research Council of Canada’s Digital Technologies Research Centre’s objective is to make everyday life smarter and more intuitive for Canadians and Canadian businesses by exploring uses of data and information in innovative and meaningful ways to solve real problems. Its focus is advanced analytics, computer vision, natural language processing, artificial intelligence technologies, blockchains, and cybersecurity.

Reporting to the President of the NRC, the Chief Digital Research Officer (CDRO) will provide strategic leadership for Digital Technologies and on matters relating to digital science/technology research across the NRC. You will provide research leadership internally amongst Vice President colleagues, your team, and with external partners. You will strategically position on-going and new projects while spearheading growth initiatives and research collaborations with academia, public-private consortia, and other research entities with an aim to develop a suite of digital tools and applications.

The impact of the Research Centre’s activities is to advance knowledge, inform public policy, and generate economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits to Canadians. In this role, you will continuously evaluate stakeholders needs by maintaining and further strengthening relationships with senior officials of universities, industry, government, and other research organizations across Canada and abroad. Your attuned sense of these dynamic requirements will enable further growth of the Research Centre’s programs.

As a well-qualified candidate for this role, you are known for your leadership in digital research along with your abilities to inspire research teams and collaborate within a multi-stakeholder environment in achieving outcomes. You bring significant experience in developing, maintaining and leveraging strategic partnerships, research alliances and client relationships with partners across all sectors. An outstanding communicator and trusted ally, your innovative approach in leading high performing teams in complex organizations will be valued in taking on this exciting challenge. As an ideal candidate, you possess a Masters or PhD in a relevant field, and the ability to communicate in both official languages is highly preferred.

NRC employees are committed to collaboration and dedicated to the betterment of life for Canadian citizens.
