The Department of Religious Studies at Elon University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in American religions / religious traditions in the Americas, to begin in Fall 2018. The candidate should be a strong teacher-scholar whose work critically engages the study of religion in North, Central, and/or South America in historical and contemporary contexts. Possible areas of specialization may include: African-American, Latin American, Caribbean, Native American, or indigenous religions; secular traditions; American minority religions; race and religion; religion and migration; critical race and ethnic studies; colonial, decolonial, and postcolonial studies; and immigration, religious diversity, and pluralism.

 

We seek a colleague who complements the strengths and backgrounds of our current faculty and adds to our theoretical and methodological perspectives. Candidates should indicate how they will bring diversity to the department through their disciplinary training, areas of teaching focus, experiences, backgrounds, and identities and describe how they will excel at teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds in an inclusive classroom and campus environment.

 

A Ph.D. in the academic study of religion, completed by August 2018, is preferred. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching Religious Studies at the undergraduate level and strong scholarly potential in the field. Teaching responsibilities will include a 100-level Religion in a Global Context course as well as upper-level courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise. If candidates specialize in secular, indigenous, or Christian traditions, they may also be responsible for developing and teaching one or more of these “Traditions” courses at the 200-level. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to Elon’s interdisciplinary Core Curriculum program and appropriate interdisciplinary programs and minors.
