Job Summary

The Office of Academic Learning and Innovation at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Project Manager ! This position leads and tracks projects related to the establishment of CU Boulder Online and supports ongoing projects in the Office of Academic Learning and Innovation. Reporting to ALI with a dotted line to the Senior Vice Provost for Online and Extended Education, the Project Manager supports projects through needs assessment, planning and budgeting, research, resource management, meeting coordination, project tracking, and collaboration across university units.

Who We Are

The Office of Academic Learning and Innovation (ALI) develops new academic enterprises for the University of Colorado Boulder locally, nationally, and globally. ALI provides centralized support for faculty and staff who seek to develop new, large-scale programs or partnerships driven by education innovation. As a division of CU Boulder Online, we bring partners together from across campus in support of new initiatives, and we collaborate on program design and management, staffing, and funding. We believe in ground-breaking change for the university through partnership and action.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Project Management:
  • Design, implement, and evaluate processes to support the ongoing work of CU Boulder Online and the Office of Academic Learning and Innovation using industry-standard tools and methodologies (e.g. Agile project management, Lean management).
  • Build and maintain project plans linked with goals/objectives, budgets, and timetables, including large-scale cross-functional campus projects as well as individual online course and program development projects.
  • Synthesize and integrate with project plans and resources from other campus units in collaboration with faculty and staff, including administrators in campus units and the leadership team within CU Boulder Online.
  • Develop tracking and evaluation practices and tools to assist in the accomplishment of established project goals and objectives, from faculty support for online course development to new business processes that support online programs.
  • Identify and propose solutions to issues, challenges, and risks in project planning, implementation, and execution for cross-functional projects and course development projects, advancing risk assessments through established channels when necessary.
  • Engage with campus units (e.g., Legal Counsel, Bursar's Office, Office of the Registrar, Graduate School, Budget & Fiscal Planning) as appropriate to identify and resolve issues and to ensure compliance with applicable procedures, policies, regulations, and laws.
  • Lead meetings, set project expectations, and monitor work progress of and for individuals and project teams.
  • Maintain regular contact with key faculty and staff partners, ensuring accountability on progress relative to project and program goals.

Reporting and Communications:
  • Prepare regular reports for and briefings with key partners on project status and performance metrics.
  • Prepare and distribute communications directed to the diverse campus partner groups and communities.
  • Capture feedback and input from diverse partners in other campus units and departments, sharing this input with the CU Boulder Online and Office of Academic Learning and Innovation teams.


Note : This position will be flexible and responsive to emergent needs, and additional job responsibilities may organically arise.

What We Can Offer
  • Salary Range: $50,000-$60,000.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field. A combination of education and relevant experience as described below may be substituted for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • 2+ years of professional, job related experience.
  • Experience working in diverse teams, groups, and/or collaborative environments.

  • Demonstrated experience in project or program management that includes a combination of the following:

  • Managing projects through their entire life cycle, including successful completion and closeout.
  • Managing multiple complex concurrent projects.
  • Staffing and managing project resources.
  • Client and/or vendor relationship management.
  • Risk management and issue resolution.


What You Will Need
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including communications to internal and external partners at all levels.
  • Familiarity with project management methodologies like Agile and Lean management to support projects.
  • Organizational skills including attention to detail and multitasking.
  • Collaboration and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to manage relationships with large and diverse groups.


What We Would Like You To Have
  • Familiarity with university systems, including but not limited to student information systems, learning management systems, and enterprise-level productivity tools.
  • Master’s Degree in educational technology, distance learning, instructional design or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification; Scrum Master certification from a recognized provider.
  • Experience with university-level programs or initiatives in any modality (residential, hybrid, or online).
