The UGA Libraries is located on the University of Georgia’s main campus in Athens, Georgia. Its facilities include the Main Library, Science Library, Zell B. Miller Learning Center, Map and Government Information Library, Richard B. Russell Special Collections Libraries, Health Science Carnegie Library, and Repository, which receive more than three million visits per year and provide a vast array of electronic and print resources. Position Summary

The University of Georgia seeks a Head of Research Data Management to coordinate research data management ( RDM ) services and support emerging campus wide efforts to improve research data practice. The Head of Research Data Management will report to the Deputy University Librarian and will work closely with a new RDM Advisory Council and will collaborate with other campus units, including EITS (IT) and the Office of the Vice President for Research. This position will provide consulting and instruction regarding the policies, resources, and methods of data management, partnering with researchers, students, and other data management groups to develop a program that is responsive to local needs while informed by current developments in data management policy and technology.

Additional Requirements

Candidates should have a doctorate or terminal masters degree in fields that utilize data management. Candidates with a non-terminal master’s as their highest degree earned must document exceptional accomplishments in data management and must be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

The Academic Professional Associate rank is an entry-level faculty rank. Candidates for appointment to this rank should show evidence of a high level of competence in the disciplinary area of the position and demonstrated promise of moving towards excellence in professional leadership, practice, service, instruction, and/or scholarly activities as appropriate for the position.
The Academic Professional rank is the second of three progressive ranks. Candidates for appointment or promotion to this rank must have had five (5) years of experience at the Academic Professional Associate level (or equivalent) either at UGA or another institution. Candidates for appointment or promotion to this rank must show evidence of a high level of achievement and impact as appropriate for the position’s duties, as well as recognition of professional excellence by peers outside the hiring unit. Individuals at this rank must present evidence of emerging stature as regional or national authorities within the scope of their assigned duties.
The Senior Academic Professional rank is the third of three progressive ranks in this faculty track. Initial appointment to this rank can occur in exceptional circumstances. An individual would normally be eligible for appointment or promotion to this rank after at least five (5) years of experience at the Academic Professional level (or equivalent). Candidates for appointment or promotion to this rank must show evidence of a high level of achievement and impact as appropriate for the position’s duties, as well as recognition of professional excellence by peers external to the university. Individuals at this rank must present evidence of established stature as national or international authorities within the scope of their assigned duties

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Familiarity with employing research data management strategies to conduct research in the sciences, social sciences, or humanities;

Familiarity with research methodologies across a variety of disciplines;

Familiarity with data management strategies for quantitative and qualitative datasets;

Excellent written and oral communication skills;

Ability to work independently within a framework of assigned responsibilities;

Ability to collaborate and communicate with a broad range of stakeholders;

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse faculty, students and colleagues

Familiarity with one or more programming/statistical languages (such as R, Python, Matlab, SAS, Stata)

Familiarity with specialized data cleaning software, such as Open Refine

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

Offers training to researchers and librarians on policies, practices, and infrastructure for data and code management, citation, licensing, sharing, and preservation.

Works closely with the RDM Advisory Council and other University units in connecting researchers with appropriate RDM resources, services, and information.

Develops and manages a web resource to guide the creation, management, use, sharing, and stewardship of research data throughout its life cycle.

May supervise graduate assistants and staff, as the RDM program develops

Researches and documents Federal and private funding agency requirements for data management, openness, and retention.

Provides regular consultation for researchers and research teams on data organization and management strategies with the goal of improving data management skills, awareness of data policies, and data sharing/compliance at UGA .

Coordinates with external data archives, granting agencies, repositories, and publishers to ensure that UGA researchers are aware of the processes, policies, and requirements for depositing data outside of UGA .

Coordinates with other data management groups at peer institutions. Actively participates in relevant conferences and meetings. Shares research, networks, and actively engages in national data management conversations.

Plays a leadership role in projecting to internal and external audiences UGA’s growing capabilities and impact in research data management and sharing.
