Job Description

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is now hiring a System Administrator in the College of Aviation at the Daytona Beach Campus. This Applied Aviation Sciences technical support professional for academic computing and research will focus on supporting Linux servers and workstations, web servers, related systems, scientific software, and simulation labs. The System Administrator will utilize technical knowledge to support a variety of systems and applications in the Linux/Unix environments specific to the Meteorology and Air Traffic Management Degree Programs’ academic and research success. This individual woks with and coordinates implementations, administration, monitoring, and general maintenance of the Meteorology and Air Traffic Management academic and research computing environment and web presence. The support specialist also consults on and participates in the design of classroom and laboratory computing environments. The support specialist should also have an in-depth understanding and proven experience with other operating systems such as Windows.

Essential Job Functions

Technical Support of Meteorology Linux Server and Computer Systems
  • Manage, coordinate, and maintain the Linux/Unix server and computing environment for the Meteorology Degree Program.
  • Curate archives and databases of meteorological data for academic and research endeavors.
  • Respond to incidents, including those reported by faculty and students. Determine hardware/software problems on meteorology servers and faculty Linux workstations. Remediate if possible, or provide alternatives to resolve the given problem. Images new and used PCs and install additional Linux software as needed.
  • Provide user documentation for meteorology services to enable faculty and students to independently use these services.
  • Provide programming and professional expertise necessary to install and configure operating systems and update software applications within meteorology’s servers and faculty offices.
Technical Support of Air Traffic Management Simulation Labs
  • Manage, coordinate, and maintain the Windows and Linux/Unix computing environment for the Air Traffic Management Degree Program’s simulation labs.
  • Respond to incidents reported by faculty and students. Determine hardware/software problems on simulation systems. Remediate if possible, or provide alternatives to resolve the given problem. Images new and used PCs and install additional Windows and Linux software as needed.
  • Work with software vendors to install, update, and maintain simulation software.
Planning and Administration
  • Collaborate with the program coordinators and system managers to identify and develop solutions providing growth in the department academic/research computing abilities.
  • Assist with day-to-day operations, planning, and problem resolution.
  • Provide project support to faculty as new solutions are needed and program require support.
  • Collaborate in the development of long range plans for Linux and network-related hardware acquisitions and their integration into the Meteorology infrastructure.
  • Ensure that software licensing and hardware maintenance contracts for meteorology systems are appropriately maintained.
  • Create and maintain documentation of the meteorology systems environment.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of work related experience.
  • Analytical skills with an in depth knowledge of information systems and technical expertise with Microsoft operating systems, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook/email and Internet end-user applications.
  • Proficiency in Shell Scripting (Bash or CSH), HTML5/CSS/Javascript/AJAX/PHP, and Python.
  • Administrative experience in:
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
    • Solaris 10/11
    • Windows
    • LDAP
    • DNS/DHCP
    • MySQL and/or PostgreSQL
    • Visualization (KVM, ESXi, or similar)
    • J2EE Application Servers
    • Network experience


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in C/C++.
  • Proficiency in Fortran.
  • Proficiency in Perl.
