Job Summary
The Division of Student Affairs at Auburn University is seeking candidates for the position of Coordinator, Campus Recreation (Outdoor Recreation) in the Campus Recreation Department to oversee the Outdoor Recreation Program by providing educational and recreational opportunities to students, faculty, and staff.
Named one of the “Coolest College Recreation Centers in America” by Men’s Health, the Recreation and Wellness Center provides state-of-the-art fitness for Auburn students. With everything from two 50-foot climbing towers to a 1/3-mile corkscrew track, the Recreation and Wellness Center is the perfect place for students to unwind from the stresses of college.
Auburn is a small, friendly university town in the rolling hills of east central Alabama, with a population around 60,000. It is conveniently located along Interstate 85, 100 miles southwest of Atlanta. To the south, Alabama’s Gulf Shores and to the north, the Appalachians Mountains are only a few hours away. Chewacla State Park, located just 3 miles south of town, boasts 30 plus miles of biking/hiking trails and a small lake that accommodates fishing and kayaking. Columbus GA, only 30 miles to the southeast, is home to the longest urban whitewater kayak/rafting in the world.
Essential Functions
Oversee the day-to-day operations, policies, procedures, and supervision of Campus Recreation’s Outdoor Recreation program, Auburn Outdoors.
Assists with the planning and review of programs, strategies, events, and schedules for Auburn Outdoors, including managing the adventure trip programs pre-trip planning process by: scouting, coordinating trip logistics and travel details, assessing risk management, and preparing staff.
Monitors the budget ensuring policies and procedures are followed regarding revenues, expenses, and reimbursements.
Assists with oversight of facilities, equipment, risk management and materials for climbing wall, rental center, bike shop, and the outdoor adventure trip program.
Coordinates personnel activities (for students) to include personnel action, staffing operations such as scheduling, pay scales, payroll oversight, evaluations, delegation, and feedback for a large student staff with attention to detail to ensure quality. Aid in preparation of staff trainings and lead those trainings in various settings paying particular attention in those trainings on: effective group management, risk management, logistical organization, excellent customer service, effective communication, and inclusivity.
Develops educational programs and action plans to increase active numbers, attract new participants, retain participants and engage members for the climbing wall, rental center, bike shop, and outdoor adventure trip program.
Compiles statistical data and provides and maintains reports used in the assessment and revision of goals, policies, and procedures.
Assists with the development, implementation, and monitoring of short and long range plans while maintaining the vision, mission and values of Auburn Outdoors, Campus Recreation and the Division of Student Affairs.

must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.
Level III requires a Bachelor’s degree in discipline appropriate to position plus 4 years experience. Experience
must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.
Education Level
When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.

Knowledge of planning, management, scheduling and oversight of outdoor recreational activities is required.
Minimum Technology Skills
Minimum License and Certifications
CPR and First Aid Certifications within 90 days of employment.
Desired Qualifications
The following qualifications are desired:
Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Recreation, Recreation Administration, Physical Education, or a related field.
Experience in collegiate outdoor recreation and active in a variety of recreational pursuits.
Wilderness First Responder training, PCIA (Professional Climbing Instructor Association) Course Provider training, Single Pitch Instructor from a nationally recognized governing body, and ACA (American Canoe Association) certifications, or other instructor certifications in outdoor related fields.
Knowledge of bicycle maintenance and ability to fit people to bikes.
Strong background in leading, managing, mentoring and developing student staff by meeting often, assigning tasks, delivering feedback and providing development opportunities.
Knowledge of facility management software, such as Innosoft Fusion, staff scheduling software, such as When to Work, and timekeeping software, such as Kronos and fluidity with Microsoft Suite particularly in excel.
Strong organization and communication skills with the ability to follow instructions and a growth mentality to learn new things.
Ability to maintain excellent customer service, effective communication, and professionalism in all areas.
Ability to help teach technical trainings in all areas of Auburn Outdoors
Experience in coordinating large events, including all logistics and risk management.
