Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Virginia Commonwealth University seeks an Associate Vice President of Education and Health Equity and Executive Associate Director of the Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry, and Innovation (iCubed). Reporting to the Vice President of Institutional Equity, Effectiveness & Success ( IES ), the AVP will oversee transformational culture and climate initiatives, as well as special interest institutes and centers. The leader will provide inspiring supervision for and broad oversight of iExcel and El Centro Latinx/Chicanx. They will assist the iCubed Director in providing central administration for iCubed’s nearly 100 members. The AVP will advance VCU’s commitment to health equity, by forging relationships and by aligning IES initiatives and programmatic offerings to health-related goals.

Mission or Goal of Unit: The Office of Institutional Equity, Effectiveness and Success ( IES ) advances VCU’s commitment to fostering a more diverse, inclusive and equitable learning and work environment. The Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry, and Innovation iCubed builds human capital across the university and community. It connects multiple disciplines and lived experiences through the creation of transdisciplinary cores, which are university community partnerships that endeavor to solve problems that disproportionately affect populations in urban areas. iCubed is also home to the Commonwealth Scholars Program, a research mentoring program affiliated with Federal Work-Study.

Chief Purpose: To support the Vice President of Institutional Equity, Effectiveness & Success ( IES ) in realizing transformational initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to serve as a senior administrator for the Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry, and Innovation.

Key Responsibilities:
● Support the Vice President in providing broad leadership in the development, implementation, and assessment of initiatives intended to cultivate a diverse and inclusive environment for employees and students
● In partnership with the Vice President and Director, provide inspirational leadership for the Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry and Innovation; responsibilities may include promoting high-quality and transformative community engaged research, supporting members through periodic professional development, supporting core leaders and members, liaising with partnering colleges, schools, and community partners, addressing personnel needs, securing funding, budgeting, public speaking, and suggesting policy and process reforms
● Provide supportive oversight for iExcel Education and serve as supervisor of the Executive Director of iExcel Education. Champion iExcel’s offerings, which presently include innovative educational programs related to emergent trends in diversity and inclusion, the Rammalogues dialogue program, and the iExcel mentoring program
● Interacts with the Health Hub
● Collaborate with leaders to move forward health-equity related goals; immerse goals within IES services and programming
● Communicate with central offices and other schools, as well as external stakeholders, on the progress, efforts, programs, and achievements of the Office
● Serve as an inspiring manager to reporting staff; offer project oversight, mentoring, guidance, performance management, goal setting, and personnel support
● Routinely collaborate with IES staff and with partnering units to achieve and champion organizational goals
● Monitor and contribute to budgets
● Represent the office and fulfill functions of the Vice President, as needed
● Participate in committees and collaborative university initiatives that may intersect colleges, schools, student groups, and other administrative offices
● As needed, usher the development of trainings, policies, and other interventions
● Position VCU as a DEI leader by exploring opportunities for growth and improvement and by shepherding change

Minimum Hiring Standards

● Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and a commitment to doing so at VCU
● The ability to shepherd change within and beyond a large bureaucracy and to engage diverse groups of stakeholders
● The ability to stand in for the VP, and to navigate challenging situations with grace
● Familiarity with research that is consistent with an R-1 institution
● Strong skills in oral and written communications, goal-setting, strategic planning
● Demonstrated experience with cross-culturally responsive communications and interventions
● Significant program administration experience
● A demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion
● Fiscal administration/ budgeting experience
● Project management expertise
● Three or more years’ experience as an effective supervisor
● A strong commitment to ethics, to advancing institutional values, and to social justice
● Ability to work successfully and to lead in both an in-person and remote environment
● A terminal degree
● Demonstrated experience fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion ( DEI ) in an academic setting

● Research leadership experience
● Experience working in a public institution
● Successful grant experience
