The Office of the Arts (OA) has established a new senior management team position for overseeing the strategies, programs, activities, and outcomes of ArtsEmerson's signature work in Artistic and Civic Engagement. At ArtsEmerson (AE), our artistic programming is twinned with our engagement programming and the Director of Artistic Programing (DoAP) and the Creative Producers work together to produce an entirely integrated and highly synergistic program that connects artists to communities in performance, residency, and innovative engagement platforms.
Reporting to the Vice President/Executive Director, the Director will lead the team on a course that:
- Embraces and champions ArtsEmerson's core values, namely that
the arts belong to everybody, the arts are an essential agent of
civic transformation, and the diversity and experience of our
audiences is paramount to the mission, strategies and achievements
of the organization
- Galvanizes and inspires departmental staff around engagement
programs that deeply connect throughout our city and campus
- Enhances relations with existing partners and develops new
- Designs processes rooted in ArtsEmerson's Theory of Change that
embed our artists and performances in our engagement efforts and
organizational values, and
- Fosters a culture of equity, accessibility, inclusion and
belonging for both traditional theatergoers and new audience
The Director will draw on ArtsEmerson's well-developed theory of change and deploy a celebrated set of engagement tools to position the organization as a leading Citizen/Arts organization in our community and in the field. They will be responsible for the development and delivery of an innovative, multi-year audience demand-building and engagement strategy in support of ArtsEmerson's mission. This includes setting key goals, objectives, and outputs for the department, supporting the development of resources for this work, overseeing the team's budget, and ensuring a vibrant, relevant and exceptional program of activities that lead to the engaged, diverse, and activist audiences ArtsEmerson seeks to support its vision of a thriving world.
The position is part of the Office of the Arts Senior Management Team and will also play a role in shared leadership and strategic direction. The Director of Artistic Programs will proactively represent the organization externally to a range of stakeholders, building and managing networks of strong external partnerships with cultural leaders, community organizations, nonprofits, local businesses, etc.
Specific duties include:
Artistic Planning and Implementation
- Develops and leads the strategy, scope and sequence of all AE
artistic and engagement programming in consultation with the
Executive Director, and the team's Associate Producers, towards the
growth and diversification of ArtsEmerson audiences.
- In collaboration with the Executive Director and General
Manager, plan, coordinate and strategize all aspects of the
artistic programming including overseeing scheduling, contracting,
negotiating, researching, viewing potential artists and proposal
- Supervises the Associate Producers of the Engagement
- Oversees the development and implementation of the Creative
Producer team of student workers.
- In collaboration with the GM, develops and manages the Artistic
and Engagement budgets.
- Collaborates closely with the Senior Management Team to advance
the internal culture, fiscal health, and public reputation of
Office of the Arts.
- Serves as a creative resource and active participant in
fundraising and marketing strategies; and shares information
necessary to the fundraising and marketing efforts of the
- Develops and oversees the team's portfolio of civic
partnerships to aid in the advancement of ArtsEmerson's Engagement
objectives and strengthen the position of ArtsEmerson as a civic
leader on matters of priority and consequence for the city of
Boston, including the city's ongoing challenges around race,
resilience, and social cohesion.
- Supervises the relationships between ArtsEmerson and community
partners intrinsic to the success of our artistic programming and
our audience engagement strategies.
- Liaises with Faculty Leadership to ensure meaningful collaboration with faculty and students
- Leads on the creation of focused engagements with communities
building partnerships and making creative work in partnership with
- Ensures that effective evaluation and monitoring is undertaken
and that all stakeholder reporting requirements are met in a timely
and professional manner.
- ArtsEmerson maintains an active calendar of artistic
development activities and, while primarily a presenter, devotes
significant energy to the commissioning, development, and
production of new works that advance our vision.
- Leads the design and planning for workshops, residencies, and
readings of works developing at ArtsEmerson. Supervises the
associate producers in implementing these plans.
- Prepares and leads the Season Planning team, scouting,
reviewing works under consideration, managing the season planning
- In collaboration with the General Manager, oversees the
artist/artist manager relationship strategy; develops and maintains
positive relationships with artist managers.
Skills & Experience
● A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required. A master's degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
● Expected credentials include 10 -15 years of experience related to the career discipline, of which 5-7 years is progressive management experience

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25
Hiring Range: $131,550.00 - $138,750.00
