Research Associate Professor in Speech and Hearing Sciences
The University of Washington, Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, is inviting applications for a Research Associate Professor non-tenure track position, effective September 2021. The Research Associate Professor will be expected to conduct an independently funded program of research focused on emergent literacy. There will also be a need to participate in dissertation committees, mentor other trainees in the conduct of research, and participate in service activities.
Non-tenure track positions of this type at the University of Washington have a 12-month service period. The initial term of appointment is for three years and open for part-time and full-time consideration.
In the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, research, education, and clinical activities are conducted with the goal of improving quality of life for individuals affected by challenges in speech, language and hearing across the life span (https://sphsc.washington.edu/vision-mission). We have close interdisciplinary ties with related units on campus, including the Departments of Linguistics, Psychology, Music, and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery; the Graduate Program in Neuroscience; the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center; the Autism Center; the Integrated Brain Imaging Center; the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences; the University of Washington Medical Center; and Seattle Children’s Hospital.

- Conducting an independently-funded research program that is directly related to literacy in children with hearing loss.
- Maintaining external funding to support the research program.
- Disseminating findings at national/international conferences and through journal publications.
- Mentoring departmental trainees in the conduct of research.
- Participating in national and some departmental service activities.
A Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Sciences or related field (or foreign equivalent) is required. Candidates studying development of literacy in individuals with hearing loss are particularly encouraged to apply; however, all candidates studying emergent literacy are welcome. .
The successful candidate will have demonstrated success in obtaining large, federally funded grants. They will have established contributions in scholarship, research and national service. Primary evaluation categories include focus of the research program, evidence of research productivity and impact, potential for external funding, and a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
