The Education Department of Wheaton College (Massachusetts) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship to begin in the Fall of 2021. We seek a dynamic teacher/scholar with a focus on elementary or early-childhood reading/language arts (ELA) education and a dedication to the preparation of undergraduate students who pursue both an education licensure major and a liberal arts major. Candidates with backgrounds in culturally-responsive instruction, multilingual learning, and/or special education are especially encouraged to apply.

Core teaching responsibilities include an elementary/early-childhood education ELA methods course, a student-teaching seminar, practicum supervision, and a course in an area of interest. As co-coordinator of Wheaton’s elementary and early-childhood education programs, this faculty member will work with colleagues to advise licensure candidates, maintain relationships with district partners, and cultivate opportunities for fieldwork.

The Education Department plays a leadership role in Wheaton’s campaign to create an antiracist community through inclusive excellence in teaching and advising. The college supports faculty scholarship through research funds, sabbaticals (including a pre-tenure leave), and a 2:3 teaching load (2:2 during the first year). The college also offers a comprehensive faculty mentoring program and invests in faculty across their career span.

Wheaton is a private, coeducational, liberal arts college of 1800 students located in Norton, MA and within easy commuting distance of Boston and Providence. Wheaton has been operating under a remote hybrid teaching model in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It is our hope to return to an in-person teaching model for the fall of 2021. While this position may be temporarily remote, there is an expectation that the teaching will be on campus when the college determines it is safe to return to in-person operations.

Applicants should provide a letter of application and curriculum vitae. The letter should describe how their experience and scholarship will support the college’s commitment to diversity and teaching excellence, as well as the department’s commitment to antiracist pedagogy. Please note that references will not be contacted upon application; three confidential letters of reference (at least one of which should address teaching effectiveness) will be collected at a later stage of the hiring process and applicants will be alerted ahead of time. A review of applications will begin on April 1 and continue until the position is filled.

Minimum Qualifications: Doctorate in Education or related field (by August of 2021) Three years PreK – grade 6 teaching experience. Ability to supervise student-teachers. Demonstrated potential for research and scholarly activity.

Wheaton College proudly offers Equal Opportunity and is an Affirmative Action employer. We actively encourage applications from women and members of underrepresented groups. Our community values diversity in all its forms. EOE: Min/Fem/Dis/Vet
