The Aichhorn Center is about to undertake a multi-year follow-up study of adults between 20 and 45 who resided in its residential treatment programs when they were teenagers. There are about 550 individuals in the potential cohort.

Between 1991 and 2020, the Aichhorn Center operated two long-term psychiatric residential treatment facilities which accepted adolescents who had failed repeatedly in every other type of placement. These young people were between 12 and 18 when they were admitted, and remained in care for an average of about two years.

The current project’s objective is to assess the subjects’ general level of social adjustment now, and to correlate that with their situations prior to and during their time in residential treatment, for which we have ample documentation. Since long-term inpatient psychiatric care is expensive and time-consuming, it is an important issue of public policy, as well as of individual treatment planning, to determine whether and when this type of intervention is beneficial and cost-effective.

We are seeking a candidate with an academic background and credentials (Masters or higher) in mental health, social sciences, criminal justice and/or public policy to coordinate the collection, evaluation and presentation of the outcome data. We intend ultimately to formulate a book-length report that could be an appropriate dissertation or post-doctoral project.

The research coordinator is a full-time position. It is funded for a minimum of three years, and could potentially continue much longer. The project will also support a small staff including workers who are experienced interviewers and are personally familiar with many of the potential study subjects, as well as technical support staff.
