Specific duties & responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Rodent Care– primary responsibility:
  2. First responder to routine clinical calls from animal care staff. Also responds to calls received by the vet directly, when appropriate.
  3. Assess problem and determine if routine treatment is appropriate or further veterinary intervention is required, as per lab’s ACUC approved protocol stipulations and research needs.
  4. If routine, resolve according to standard protocol, including formulation of treatment plans, and all associated communication/coordination with research staff, etc.
  5. If non-routine, gather clinical and husbandry, history, and in communication with veterinarian, facilitate treatment according to veterinary recommendations.
  • Follow up with treatment plans to ensure compliance and resolution, and give progress reports to veterinarian (for non-routine cases).
  • Maintain electronic record of all active/treatment cases, and close clinical cases when resolved appropriately.
  • Provides health history, and coordinates submission of animals to pathology when requested by research staff, and approved by veterinarian.
  • Notify lab of husbandry concerns resulting in clinical harm, provide guidance to resolve, and communicate issues to the vet, or ACUC, if it is chronic issue.
  • Rodent Support Programs- primary responsibility:
  • Rodent anesthesia, including, but not limited to:
  • Teaching rodent anesthesia techniques, including correct use of the rodent gas anesthesia machines, proper equipment and sterilization techniques
  • Verify protocol, and biosafety approval for use of anesthesia machines.
  • Certify users on policy/procedures of RAR machine use, and archival of certification history.
  • Coordinate reservations, and maintain machine calendar, for all approved users.
  • Providing rodent anesthesia services to research staff, if requested.
  • Maintenance and resupply of equipment for the rodent anesthesia machines
  • Gather, and provide necessary budget info to appropriate admin for extra billing, late fees, etc.
  • Rodent Support Programs– secondary responsibility (as required for cross-coverage)
  • Rodent rederivation by neonatal transfer and caesarian section.
  • Teaching and performing rodent techniques as requested by the veterinarian, including restraint, IM, IV, IP and SQ injections, blood and tissue collection, rodent surgery techniques, nail and incisor trim.
  • Sample collection, including but not limited to blood and tissue collection
  • Research support (colony management, sample collection)
  • Diagnostic lab techniques (in-house parasitology, basic microscopy, etc.).
  • Other duties as requested by the veterinarian
  • Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

    High school diploma or GED and 1 year of related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Preferred qualifications:

  • College degree, and experience in animal care preferred (extra preference to those with lab animal experience).
  • Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    1. No known rodent allergies
    2. Attention to detail; conscientious; strong written, and verbal, communication skills; & ability to work independently.
    3. Excellent record keeping skills, and proficiency with use of computer programs, including spreadsheets, and databases.
    4. Must be a team player, and able to cross train with other veterinary technicians, in order to provide cross-coverage as needed.

    The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
