Vice Chancellor of Advancement
The Vice Chancellor for Advancement serves as a dynamic, data-informed, results-oriented fundraising operations leader. This leader will be responsible for the success of Advancement strategy, operations, and the inspiration to unlock the full potential of a strong team of Advancement professionals.
Reporting to the Chancellor and sitting on the Chancellor's executive leadership team, this position will take the lead role for the University as it plans for its 150th Anniversary in 2026. The University of Colorado Boulder is in the planning phase of a potential comprehensive campaign for the Boulder campus. This will be the first campus-level campaign in CU Boulder’s history, with the public launch anticipated in 2022, and the campaign concluding in 2027, coinciding with the campus’ sesquicentennial anniversary.

Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano
Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano was appointed chancellor in 2009. He has served the University of Colorado Boulder for 46 years. He joined the university in 1974 as an assistant professor of curriculum and instruction in the School of Education. Dr. DiStefano is a lifelong educator. A first-generation college student, he knows first-hand the benefit of education and opportunity. He earned his doctorate in humanities education from The Ohio State University.
As chancellor, Dr. DiStefano works closely with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and donors as well as government, industry, business, and community leaders in extending CU Boulder’s legacy as a preeminent national comprehensive research university. His strategic imperatives for the campus are to develop tomorrow’s leaders, be the top university for innovation, and to positively impact humanity. The chancellor serves as the Quigg and Virginia S. Newton Endowed Chair in Leadership, overseeing CU Boulder’s prestigious leadership programs. The program brings national and world leaders to campus to interact with students and advise them on leadership paths. He also serves on the NCAA Board of Governors, the Division I Board of Directors, the Pac-12 Conference CEO Group, and the Boulder Community Health Board of Directors.
Provost Russell Moore
Russell L. Moore (BS, University of California Davis, 1976; Ph.D., Washington State University, 1982) is Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Professor of Integrative Physiology and an adjunct professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Colorado Boulder in 1993, he was on the faculty of the Departments of Medicine and Cellular & Molecular Physiology at The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine (1986-1993). His research focuses on adaptations of the heart to physiological and pathological stress, particularly as they relate to the development of heart failure. At CU-Boulder, he has served as a department chair from 1994-2001 and co-chaired the Flagship 2030 Task Force on Research, Scholarship, and Creative Works. He was appointed to serve as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research in 2006 and was appointed to serve as the Interim Vice Chancellor for Research in 2009. Dr. Moore began his service as the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) on October 13, 2010; he served as interim Provost and VCAA from July 01 to Oct 12, 2010.
Chief Operating Officer Patrick O'Rourke
Patrick O'Rourke is an Executive Vice Chancellor and the Chief Operating Officer on the Boulder campus. In this role, he is responsible for the operation of the Strategic Resources and Support team, which provides operational support for the campus in human resources, information technology, enrollment management, budget and finance, communications, compliance and security, institutional equity, government and community relations, and infrastructure and sustainability. Strategic Resources and Support partners with the academic administration and faculty to support the university’s mission of teaching, research, and service.
Pat previously served as Vice President, University Counsel and Secretary of the Board of Regents from 2012 through 2020, where was responsible for coordinating the university’s legal affairs and assisting the Board of Regents in its governance role. Before serving in that role, Pat was responsible for overseeing the university’s litigation. He teaches as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Colorado School of Law and the Colorado School of Public Health on the Anschutz Medical Campus. Pat received his undergraduate degree from Creighton University and his law degree from The Georgetown University Law Center. He is active in the community and has served as a board member of the Denver School of Science and Technology, the Center for Legal Inclusiveness, and the Colorado Judicial Institute.
President / Chief Executive Officer, University of Colorado Foundation
Jack Finlaw has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Colorado Foundation since 2014. Jack is responsible for the Foundation’s overall performance through effective management of its staff and operations, maintenance of a strong working relationship with the University’s senior leadership, and stewardship of the Foundation’s fiduciary obligations within the guidelines and policies set by the Board of Directors.
Before he joined the Foundation, Jack spent more than a decade in public service. He was chief legal counsel to the Governor of Colorado from 2011 to 2014, and he held several senior governmental positions with the City and County of Denver between 2003 and 2011. Prior to his public sector career, Jack was a corporate and securities lawyer in the cable television industry for almost twenty years.
Jack’s community service includes membership on the boards of Colorado Public Radio, the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, and Visit Denver. He also has served as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at CU Denver’s College of Arts & Media and the boards of the Colorado Symphony, the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation, and Opera Colorado.
Jack is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and the University of Denver’s College of Law.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Provide forward-thinking leadership for the Advancement team.
- Foster operational excellence to engage the team and drive outstanding performance to achieve fundraising and engagement goals.
- Serve as a highly collaborative and strategic leader and chief fundraising officer to develop and successfully lead CU Boulder’s multi-year, multi-million-dollar capital campaign.
- Ensure all Advancement units and support functions are integrated and coordinated effectively in support of the university’s priorities and mission.
- Oversee the Alumni Association which is responsible for providing meaningful experiences and valuable resources to over 300,000 alumni.
- Continuously increase fundraising through progressive initiatives in principal gifts, major gifts, corporate and foundation giving, planned giving, alumni and parent giving, and engagement experiences.
- Manage a team of approximately 170 advancement and alumni professionals with specific responsibilities.
- Develop and lead a multi-unit budget and effectively manage financial resources.
- Interact closely with the Chancellor, the Provost, Chief Operating Officer, deans, vice-chancellors, athletics director, and campus constituents as well as other leaders at the University of Colorado System and the University of Colorado Foundation.
- Represent the Chancellor and campus perspective at System-level meetings to ensure strategic alignment.
- Work closely with the Chancellor to align key donors’ philanthropic objectives with the university’s vision, strategies, and operational plans.
- Support the Chancellor’s development activities, leading engagement of prospects for major university priorities, providing research, and conferring on strategies.
- Maintain collaborative partnerships with academic affairs, enrollment management, athletics, research and innovation, student affairs, finance, and other campus units whose active participation and engagement are crucial to an effective development program.
- Collaborate with strategic relations and communications to employ communication and social media strategies to maintain a strong online and print presence to engage current and potential donors.
- Maintain a portfolio of principal gift prospects and key CU Boulder community members and leaders.
- Develop and execute strategies toward principal gift solicitations for prospects and donors, spearhead the direction, and bring to bear the maximum philanthropic potential of each prospect.
- Serve as an exemplary advocate for CU Boulder in building external relationships that closely link the community with the university.
- Demonstrate inspirational leadership, a strong commitment and experience, and a vision to advise and implement diversity, equity, and inclusion within Advancement as well as the university’s diversity, equity, and inclusion plans.
What We Can Offer
The hiring range for this position is $300,000.00-$395,000.00.

What We Require
- A graduate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible job-related management experience with a consistent record of success in soliciting principal and major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
- Leadership experience in motivating and developing a team with emphasis on coaching and mentoring.

- 8 years of executive-level Advancement experience.
- Executive level skills vital to lead planning and implementation of advancement priorities and operations.
- Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, communication skills that demonstrate the ability to mentor and develop staff to enhance excellent fundraising and operational performance.
- Proven success in cultivating, soliciting, and closing principal gifts ($3M) level; leadership experience planning and executing a comprehensive campaign.
- Knowledge of the legal requirements and standard methodologies of fundraising stewardship with donors and the ability to apply them in innovative ways.
- A highly flexible nature, sophisticated and professional demeanor, and the ability to think quickly and react effectively to unanticipated circumstances, opportunities, and complex situations.
- History of, and desire to work in a collaborative team-based environment.
- An ability to navigate complex environments with evolving priorities and communication plans.
- Willingness to travel and work a flexible schedule.
- A demonstrated record of results-oriented action and leadership.
- Proven skills with collecting and using data to assess programs, innovate, and increase shared accountability.
