Position Summary
The Student Accommodations Specialist is responsible for meeting with students to review accommodation requests and facilitate accommodations for students with disabilities. The Student Accommodations Specialist provides information and support to students with disabilities under the direction of appropriate staff.
Essential Job Functions of Position
Under the director’s guidance, engage and facilitate the interactive process for providing reasonable accommodations, and consult with students and faculty concerning accommodations to facilitate access to education and programs.
Respond to requests for reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
Serve as a resource to the Washburn campus community about providing reasonable accommodations for students and answer inquiries about the University’s accommodation process for student accommodations.
Provide support and information to students with disabilities about available technology aids, scheduling and proctoring tests, organizing note-taking, referrals to appropriate academic and career development resources, and other accommodation-related activities.
Review student requests and documentation provided by medical professionals to determine reasonable accommodations.
Assist staff with offering campus programs and professional development opportunities for faculty and staff to explain the student accommodation process.
Responsible for administrative support activities for the student accommodation process, which may include but are not limited to file maintenance, updating forms, compiling reports, monitoring data entry by student workers, completing state reimbursement forms, and payment vouchers to facilitate payments for goods and services received.
Work with Washburn’s bookstore, the university library, and/or publishers to locate alternate formatted textbooks and other supplies.
Be an actively engaged team member who is aware of the department’s events, programs, and available information to assist and/or direct students to the appropriate staff member or resource as needed or as appropriate.
Serve on the ADA Committee and consult with appropriate staff to provide effective and proper accommodations for students with disabilities as assigned or as appropriate.
Perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.
Non-Essential Job Functions of Position
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree. Familiar with facilitating the interactive process and providing accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Experience using Word and Powerpoint.
Preferred: Master’s degree. Knowledge of assistive technology. Familiarity with student information management systems. Experience using Excel, Outlook.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Effective communication skills and the proven ability to build and maintain professional collaborative relationships.
Preferred: Knowledge of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (as amended), or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (as amended), and the Job Accommodation Network ( JAN ).
