Basic Job Summary: The overall purpose of the job is to supervise library staff and provide library services to students, faculty and staff on the Strawberry Plains Campus. The Campus Librarian participates collaboratively with librarian colleagues, college faculty, and campus staff to promote and provide circulation services; research assistance services to students, faculty, staff and community members in-person or remotely (via online chat, phone, email or other methods); collaborate with librarians and other faculty to develop, promote, and provide library instruction and information literacy; and participate in collection development for print and electronic materials. This position is responsible for leading the library’s events and exhibitions for the Appalachian Heritage Project NEH grant.

This position serves as a part of the campus administrative team and/or represents the Campus Dean as requested.

Essential Job Functions:

3 5% Referenceand Circulation

Provide reference service and research assistance to the libraries’ users (students, faculty, adjuncts, staff, and community members) in-person and remotely (via live chat, email, phone, and other methods) using appropriate information sources. Provide individual consultations for library research either in-person or by electronic means. G athers, reports, and utilizes statistics for reference and research assistance to improve services and plan coverage.

Coordinates and supervises the staffing of the campus library, and supervises and assists with circulation activities. Interviews, hires, trains, supervises, assigns duties, explains college policies and procedures, and establishes work schedules for the Campus Library Assistant, evening assistant, and work/study students. Prepares employment documents: contracts, work schedules, and evaluations, etc.

15% Appalachian Heritage Project Events and Exhibitions

Develop quarterly programming for the NEH grant-funded Appalachian Heritage Project: Appalachia Speaks Fall Workshop (literature and language), Celebrate Appalachia Spring Program (regional culture), Experience Appalachia Summer Workshop (hands-on activities), and Appalachian Showcase Winter Exhibition (fine arts).

15% Campus Administration

The Campus Librarian is an integral part of the campus community, serving as a part of the campus administrative team and/or representing the Campus Dean as requested. Covers executive function and intervention in the absence of the Campus Dean as requested. Assists with campus activities, displays, workshops and/or college & community events as directed by the Campus Dean. Maintains and updates the campus website and/or online campus calendars.

10% Instruction

Provide instruction to individuals and groups in classroom or workshop settings. Design classes, workshops, and online tutorials to instruct students, faculty, or staff in information literacy. Assist classroom faculty and adjuncts in the development of library or research assignments, library learning objects, and subject or course guides for their classes and in the use of other library resources.

10% Committees

Serve on college committees and participate in college initiatives and functions. Participate in library departmental meetings, training activities, and projects. Engage in professional development activities such as conferences and webinars to keep skills and knowledge current.

10% Academic and Campus Liaison

Serve as Pellissippi Libraries’ liaison to administration and faculty within the Campus community. Perform collection development activities including materials selection and deselection in assigned subject areas. Provide library liaison services for collection development to faculty teaching in assigned areas. Attend department meetings and create accreditation reports for assigned departments. Collaborates with the Circulation Librarian, Acquisition Librarian, and Cataloging Librarian to develop and execute polices to access the library collection.

5% Professional Development

Keep abreast of and make contributions to professional literature, activities of professional organizations, and scholarly developments.

As needed.

Provides backup for Campus Library staff, and may provide reference or instruction backup for any Librarian.

Key Results Areas:

Ensures that the Strawberry Plains Campus Library service desk is staffed to provide services to patrons. All staff providing circulation services will be trained in circulation policies and procedures. Library materials will be loaned in the ILS (per policies), returned in ILS, re-shelved, and periodically shelf-read to confirm materials are located in the correct order. Timesheets will be submitted to report worked hours of staff. Intercampus loans and interlibrary loans will be processed and patrons will receive the materials they have requested. Instruction and reference services will have a demonstrated impact on student success and retention, and prevalent use of the libraries’ resources and services among students.

JOB STANDARDS:

· MLS/MLIS/MIS degree from an ALA accredited program at time of appointment required.

· One-year previous reference and library instructional experience or concentration of MLS degree courses in reference and instruction preferred .

· Minimum two years of supervisory experience preferred.

Part-time work experience is calculated at 50% credit of full-time work experience.
