A.T. Still University (ATSU) is seeking an Assistant Controller, Accounting Services on the Kirksville, Missouri, campus. The Assistant Controller, Accounting Services reports to the Controller, Accounting Services and has management oversight over staff and assigned accounting services. They ensure accounting information integrity by recording, verifying, and reconciling transactions while utilizing excellent analytical skills with an in-depth knowledge of accounting principles to analyze and report financial transactions and reports. The ideal candidate has demonstrated success collaborating and/or managing staff in a culturally diverse environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and record asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information; incorporating all software packages utilized such as clinic billing systems, travel software
  • Verify, allocate, post, and reconcile general ledger accounts ensuring accuracy and effectiveness in accounting tasks by spotting errors and implementing efficiency and spending improvements
  • Summarize financial status by collecting information, preparing financial reports, and analyzing operating results; then present results to management
  • Provide supervisory support of month-end close and year-end close process along with assigned accounting services functions (i.e., accounts payable, cash disbursements, cash receipts, gift and credit card receipting, grants, fixed assets, and general accounting)
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls for finance-related transactions
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP principles, IRS regulations, and legal requirements
  • Complete external audit responsibilities by analyzing and scheduling general ledger accounts; providing required analysis for auditors
  • Interface with outside audit firm(s), banks, investment firms, credit card companies, and ATSU management
  • Participate in financial standards setting, policy creation, and assist with tax return preparation and compliance as needed
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
  • Collaborate with colleagues to improve financial procedures, recommend modifications to accounting systems and procedures, and provide input into the department’s goal-setting process
  • Plan, assign, and review staff’s work
  • Additional finance duties as necessary


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance
  • Seven years or more of varied types of professional accounting experience
  • Thorough knowledge of basic accounting procedures and familiarity with financial accounting statements
  • In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process
  • Must be self-motivated with a collaborative style and possess excellent analytical, research, organizational and verbal/written communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to interact with upper management and capability to present and explain financial data and analysis to both finance and non-finance audiences
  • Must be detail-oriented to ensure accuracy and quality of output while meeting work deadlines
  • Continuous improvement mindset
  • Hands-on experience with accounting software packages and strong MS Excel skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA certificate
  • MBA or Master of Accountancy
  • Experience with Microsoft GP Dynamics ERP, Microsoft Management Reporter, and XLerant BudgetPak software
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of cultural proficiency
