Role Summary

The Department of Government and Society seeks to make an appointment to a Full Professorship in Public Administration and Public Policy. The position will be of interest to those with expertise in any of the following areas: Public Administration, Public Organizational Behavior, Public Human Resource Management, Public Organizational Leadership, Public Policy Making and Analysis, Public Organization Theory, Public Budgeting and finance, Public Sector Governance, and Comparative Public Administration.

The role holder will be a member of The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS). They will be a recognized authority in their field, developing and maintaining a high-profile external profile and will become a leading member of a dynamic, cutting edge research culture, having access to the excellent research facilities which UAEU offers. They will have a vital role to play in the development and achievement of CHSS within the context of the strategic goals of UAEU, leading research and scholarship in your field.

They will be expected to lead on advanced, internationally excellent research, securing high impact research funding, to teach and to supervise at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to contribute to admissions, examining and assessment, and to contribute fully to academic administration in both the Department, the College, and the University.

 

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will make a full contribution to the academic life of the University through research, teaching, supervising master theses written in Arabic and English, and academic service. They are expected to have extensive teaching experience, together with a significant publication record, proven research experience and to have demonstrated academic leadership and an ability to lead and manage effectively. There is considerable flexibility in the organization of duties and faculty workload planning is undertaken as part of ongoing staff review with the Department Chair and/or Coordinator of the Master of Governance and Public Policy Program in order to ensure appropriate time and opportunity to undertake all duties as well as for professional development. The broad balance of duties for Professors (at all levels) includes Teaching, Supervision and mentoring master students, and Examining (40%), Research (40%) and to contribute to the overall development of the University, College and Departmental profile as a world-leading provider of education, training and research of the highest academic standard (20%).

The College and Department

The Department of Government and Society in the CHSS is housed in a state-of-the -art facility on Maqam campus offering undergraduate and graduate programs. The Department is interdisciplinary, with 24 full-time faculty members specializing in Public Administration and Public Policy, International Relations, Comparative Politics, and Sociology. The department of Government and Society hosts undergraduate and graduate programs. The Master of Governance and Public Policy is a pioneering program in public administration as it focusses on all aspects of public administration and the managing of public policies and governance. The MGPP is currently offered in Abu Dhabi city with model cohorts that range between five and fifteen students to allow students to take advantage of the Program and gain adequate knowledge and training in the subject matter (for more information about the MGPP: https://www.uaeu.ac.ae/en/catalog/graduate/programs/master-of-governance-and-public-policy.shtml). CHSS recently implemented a major restructuring of its departments, intended to facilitate program innovation and opportunities for increased interdisciplinary research. The University offers a competitive compensation package for faculty with a starting annual salary commensurate with experience. In exceptional cases, appointments advertised for posts at Assistant Professor level may be made to Associate Professor. There is the opportunity for promotion in post through the annual review and promotion system.

 

Education & qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD in Public Administration and Public Policy from an American, Canadian, or British accredited university granted through a full-time doctoral study and residency. Successful candidates should have strong theoretical and professional background in Public Administration and a track record of teaching Public Administration courses in preferably both undergraduate and graduate levels. Duties involve full engagement in graduate and undergraduate teaching, supervising students’ research and activities, in addition to conducting high-impact research and service. Teaching is delivered mainly in English with some courses being taught in Arabic. Students in the Master Program of Governance and Public Policy are allowed to write their master theses in Arabic or English. Therefore, successful candidate should be a bilingual with native or near-native English skills in addition to possessing high proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking Arabic.

Applicants should upload a CV and a cover letter which should include a concise statement of motivation of no more than 750 words that specifies research interests and plans and teaching philosophy. The application package should include two samples of written and/or published work written in Arabic and two other samples of research written in English. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed remotely. Final round interviews may be held on campus and candidates may be asked to submit a more detailed research proposal and/or give a presentation as part of the interview process.
