Position: Department Chair (Associate Professor or Professor)

Guided by its Cardinal Principles, the University of Louisville (UofL) is striving to become a premier anti-racist metropolitan research university. To help realize this goal, the Department of Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Teacher Education (EMSTEd) within the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) seeks a visionary leader to fill the Department Chair position. The EMSTEd Department Chair oversees the administration for a department of 17 full-time faculty and staff members and supports the success of teaching, scholarship, and service across undergraduate and graduate programs to realize the department's core mission: to prepare teachers to be exemplary professional practitioners who are strong in their content knowledge as well as in effective research-informed, culturally sustaining and equity-focused pedagogies. The department offers a variety of teacher education programs (elementary, middle grades, and secondary; single and dual content-area certification; traditional undergraduate and graduate degrees and endorsements; and alternative certification pathways, including the Louisville Teacher Residency). Through clinically-rich courses, members of the department work to enact programs that are transformative for various stakeholders (e.g., teacher candidates, elementary, middle, and high school students and teachers, and administrators, among others), and designed to advance culturally sustaining pedagogies that respond to the unique needs of diverse audiences, to promote teaching/learning and social justice.

Major Responsibilities

The EMSTEd Department Chair is responsible for cultivating, articulating, and enacting a vision for the department's research, teaching, and service programs. Additional duties include advocating for department faculty, staff, and students; coordinating accreditation processes; establishing and maintaining a departmental climate conducive to academic advancement; and managing and allocating resources.

Required Qualifications

  • Evidence of commitment to the principles of anti-racism, diversity, social justice, and culturally sustaining pedagogies
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of administrative or leadership experience, such as Department Chair, Assistant Chair, and/or Program Chair in teacher education or related field
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching and the ability to mentor junior and clinical faculty, and doctoral students
  • Evidence of collaborative leadership style and experience addressing personnel decisions
  • A vision of research consistent with the college's strategic plan and UofL's mission
  • Commitment to sustaining and enhancing high-quality, accredited programs
  • Ph.D. in a field related to teacher education/teaching and learning

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated successful scholarship and application in the field related to the position
  • Experience that would merit tenure and the rank of Full Professor in the Department of Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Teacher Education
  • Skill in communicating clearly and thinking systemically and creatively
  • Experience collaborating with mid-career and senior faculty engaged in University and community partnership work
  • Commitment to transparent and equitable management of department funds
  • Ability to strategically navigate the challenges and opportunities facing the department in the current climate of higher education
  • Experience with facilitating the acquisition of external funding

Salary: Competitive, based on experience and qualifications Appointment: 12-month contract

Beginning Date: July 2021, or soon thereafter
