The Executive Director of Educational Technology and Innovation will lead the continued, institution-wide transformation of online, blended, and technology-enhanced instruction at the College for Creative Studies (CCS).

The Executive Director will report directly to the President and will work closely with the vice-presidents, deans, the office of Academic Affairs, and IT.  They will develop short- and long-term strategies to sustain and promote innovation in teaching and learning with specific foci on LMS integration, new online programs, and the refinement and implementation of a professional development program for faculty, staff, and students. The Executive Director will oversee staff dedicated to providing both instructional design and professional development for CCS.

  • Work closely with the President and other key stakeholders to develop short-term and long-term goals for technology-enhanced teaching and learning at CCS in undergraduate, graduate, certificate, and continuing studies programs;
  • Develop and support the implementation of professional development for face-to-face, blended/hybrid, and online instruction;
  • Support the development and implementation of training for students, faculty, and staff; supervise professional developers and trainers;
  • Collaborate, assist, and support facilitation of professional development workshops and symposia, particularly regarding course design, online teaching, technology-enhanced learning and new faculty orientation;
  • Devise and implement ongoing assessment plans for LMS by routinely analyzing student, staff, and faculty needs through surveys and other feedback mechanisms to determine priorities for workshops, programs, and possible new services for the CCS community;
  • Develop and support instructional design processes for course development; supervise instructional designers;
  • Develop and maintain an annual budget;
  • Collaborate with IT on the acquisition, evaluation, and implementation of academic or educational technologies;
  • Build awareness at leadership levels of current and forthcoming pedagogical models and delivery systems enhanced with, by, and through technology (e.g., badges, certificates, micro-credentials);
  • Lead discussions about innovative tools potentially impacting higher education (e.g., virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality);
  • Co-develop and implement policies, procedures, and standards related to the effective delivery of technology-enhanced instruction;
  • Monitor and establish relationships with external partners that support technology-enhanced instruction at CCS
  • Leverage knowledge of research, competition, and trends to develop strategies for marketing online programs and evaluate the feasibility of new initiatives;
  • Partner with stakeholders to establish relationships with existing and new partners supporting the delivery of content at CCS;
  • Compile regular reports on the costs, usage levels, and availability of all aspects of educational technologies used at CCS (e.g., the LMS);
  • Collaborate with the library in integrating online materials and data sources;
  • Work with colleagues to prepare grants to secure funding for the center;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the President.
  • Work with Academic Affairs on design and implementation methodologies for academic assessment and support/participate in assessment initiatives and implementation
  • Serve as ex-officio on campus committees, including the Curriculum Committee, the Assessment Committee, the Academic Technologies Committee, and Faculty Assembly
  • Support the development and maintenance of contractual relationships as they relate to online and technology-enhanced offerings, such as NC-SARA and EvaluationKit.
  • Collaborate, assist, and support in the creation and maintenance of online, hybrid or blended, and technology-enhanced degree and certificate programs.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Five or more years of academic technology or educational technology experience;
    • Extensive experience of innovation in teaching and learning, online pedagogy, and a broad understanding of new and emerging technologies; 
    • Extensive experience of instructional design for LMS enhanced in-person learning and online learning;
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to work effectively as a team leader and colleague across the college;
    • A graduate degree in a related field;
    • Experience working with learning management systems;
    • Experience managing budgets, supervising teams, and developing program plans (e.g., moving from vision to integration).
  • Desired Qualifications
    • Technical experience or understanding of enterprise systems (e.g., evaluation, assessment, curriculum management)
    • Experience working with faculty in Art and Design;
    • Experience working with Canvas;
    • Competence working across multiple technology platforms;
    • Experience working in mobile delivery of instruction;
    • Ability to conduct, support, and read research;
    • Personal experience teaching and teaching or developing online courses.
