Position Summary:

The Seasonal Vessel Coordinator supports the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve by maintaining two vessels, outboard engines, trailers, and associated equipment, coordinating with partners and Reserve staff to plan vessel use through the NOAA Small Boat Program, and safely operating the vessels in a variety of conditions in the St. Louis River estuary and nearshore Lake Superior. This position supports on-water programing and research efforts that align with the Reserve's mission of research, education, outreach, and stewardship while coordinating with vessel support volunteers through the Friends of the Lake Superior Reserve. The position is 20 hours per week on average between May and September.

This position is a part of the Division of Extension Natural Resources Institute. The Natural Resources Institute works at the crossroads of communities, natural resources and agriculture to empower individuals and communities to make informed decisions that benefit our shared natural resources.

Based on the St. Louis River Estuary in Superior, WI, the 16,697-acre Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve is one of 29 reserves in the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. The Reserve is a part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension and is supported through a network of innovative regional partnerships. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provides federal leadership and guidance to the Reserve system.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

High school diploma required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Required:
1. At least 2 years experience operating and maintaining vessels
2. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and coordinate with partners using a variety of methods and technology;
3. Demonstrated use of problem-solving skills to independently address complex issues;
4. Experience effectively working with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity
5. Completion of or willingness to complete a USCG Auxiliary Boating Skills and Seamanship course or equivalent, and certification in Wilderness First Aid, CPR/AED and Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control training. Trainings may be arranged by the Reserve as needed.

Preferred:
1. Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (also known as a USCG Six-pack) captain's license or other advanced boat operator certification
2. Experience working on-board vessels that support scientific research and/or environmental education efforts
3. Experience operating vessels equipped with side scan sonar, and radar systems
4. Familiarity navigating within the St. Louis River estuary and nearshore zone of Western Lake Superior

Additional Information:

1. The primary accountability relationship for this position is the Lake Superior Reserve Director
2. This position's primary programming focus is in Douglas County, WI; however, some work may be conducted over a broader geographical area.
3. Expectation to arrange for transportation adequate to meet position responsibilities and essential job functions;
4. Work evenings or weekends as needed to meet programming needs
5. Must be able to carry or arrange for transportation of equipment, up to 50 lbs.
