7th & 8th Grade Mathematics Teacher Department: Middle School Location: Washington, DC
Position Start Date: 2021/2022 School Year
Sidwell Friends School, a co-educational Quaker day school in Washington, DC, seeks a full-time 7th-8th grade Mathematics teacher beginning in the 2021-2022 school year.
The 7/8 Math teacher will be responsible for teaching some combination of math courses that may include, in any given year: a 7th grade math course (which covers a variety of discrete math topics that develop students abstract thinking skills); an Introduction to Algebra course; and a highly rigorous Algebra I course. Evidence of both supporting and challenging Middle School students in their mathematical thinking is essential, as is a commitment to helping them not only use, but understand, the reason that different mathematical processes work. An ability to teach students how to talk and write about math, in addition to completing problems correctly, is also important. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate an ability to inspire and support students and will show a willingness to work collaboratively and thrive in an environment committed to academic excellence. An appreciation for young adolescents and a sense of humor are also essential.
Other duties include: advising a group of 7th and 8th grade students; writing student reports; effective communication and collaboration with students, colleagues, and families; attendance at meetings; and collaboration with Math colleagues in the Middle School and other divisions.
Applicants must possess a bachelors degree (masters preferred) and 3-5 years of math teaching experience, preferably at the middle school level. Teaching positions at Sidwell Friends School are campus-based; therefore, this position requires teaching in person.
Interested candidates should upload a resume, cover letter, statement of teaching philosophy, and contact information for three references via our online application.
