We are looking for candidates with both academic and people skills who work well in teams, honor their commitments, and innovate in a rapidly changing world. As an Extension Agent you will work jointly for UF/IFAS Extension and Broward County. As the 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent, you will lead through the design, implementation, and evaluation of positive youth development programs for youth and adult volunteers. Your comprehensive extension education program will be guided by an advisory committee that incorporates the needs of the county’s diverse population. You will demonstrate excellent customer service and you will respond to client needs in a timely and professional manner. Your office will be located at the Broward County Extension Office in Davie.

What you will do:

  • Develop, conduct, coordinate, evaluate, and report on educational programs for youth ages 5-18 and volunteers.
  • Develop volunteer management strategy to ensure program polices, enrollment, record keeping, risk management, and experiential learning procedures are updated and accurate.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate staff.
  • Foster an inclusive environment and build effective relationships with stakeholders, county government, community leaders, private sector clientele, media, government agencies, county residents, and UF/IFAS faculty and staff.
  • Develop volunteer management strategy to ensure program polices, enrollment, record keeping, risk management, and experiential learning procedures are updated and accurate.
  • Market the extension program through multi-media platforms.
  • Target programs to reflect the county’s population diversity and unique educational needs using a variety of program delivery methods.
  • Establish and maintain an effective advisory committee to assist with program development and implementation.
  • Develop community partnerships.
  • Work as part of a team with local volunteers, organizations, agencies, and UF/IFAS colleagues to promote positive youth development.
  • Establish and maintain an effective system for accountability.
  • Produce creative works and publications.
  • Participate in professional associations.
  • Write an annual plan of work and report of accomplishment.
  • Assume other responsibilities that benefit the total county extension program as assigned by the County Extension Director and District Extension Director.

The largest places in Broward County by population are Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, and Hollywood. Broward County borders Collier County, Hendry County, Miami-Dade County and Palm Beach County. Many Broward residents are part-time winter residents and enjoy the sub-tropical climate and ocean access. Since 1939, there has been an active Cooperative Extension program educating the South Florida community. Broward County Extension is part of the Southeast Extension District made up of twelve counties and the Seminole Tribe.

Extension is a partnership between state, federal, and county governments to provide scientific knowledge and expertise to the public. As such, all partners are involved in the supervision of the office and contribute to the salary and support resources. The primary goal of Extension is to disseminate the latest knowledge and applicable technologies in agriculture, human and natural resources, and the life sciences in order to sustain and enhance the quality of human life. The UF/IFAS mission is accomplished through Extension faculty members, scientists, educators, administrative staff, and volunteers working cohesively throughout Florida’s 67 counties.

What you will bring (required):

  • A bachelor’s degree in youth development, education, community development/sociology or a related field from an accredited college or university. We will accept applicants without a bachelor’s degree if the degree will be earned by May, 2021. If hired with a bachelor’s degree, we want you to continue to grow in your career. As such, we expect you to make at least 50% progress towards obtaining your master’s degree within the first 6 years of employment.
  • Strong written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish solid partnerships and to find innovative ways to attract new audiences and volunteers.
  • A commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to possess (or be able to obtain) a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Flexibility with working hours; willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends and overnight travel.


What you will bring (preferred):

  • A master’s degree.
  • Experience creating lesson plans, developing instructional materials, and applying teaching methods appropriate for the audience is highly desirable.
  • Expertise in getting groups to work together for a higher goal, managing competing priorities, and adaptability to handle unexpected situations is a plus for this role
  • Leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working in multicultural settings and coursework/training on multicultural topics are highly desirable.
  • Bilingual ability in English/Spanish is a plus.
  • A strong commitment to community.
  • Evidence of exceptional collaborations, partnerships, and marketing with community agencies and groups.
  • Technological literacy necessary for communication and program management, including social media.
