Department Summary
The Department of Theatre Arts is an instructional and research
department within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). We are
committed to a liberal arts approach to theatre education,
maintaining high standards both in academic and creative practices.
We serve students with a wide range of needs and interests,
training them to create theatre into the future, as educators,
audience members, and/or professional practitioners.
In our department, theory and practice are mutually reinforcing.
Students will find their academic studies illuminated by their
participation in theatrical productions. We pursue the study of the
histories and literature of theatre, from a wide variety of
cultures and times, as cultural formations that can inform and
advance artistic practice. We study established theories and
practices, while remaining equally committed to innovation and new
interpretations of theatre.
We encourage excellence, both as individuals and as a team. Through
the mastery of skills and techniques, students may advance their
own creative ideas, while working as collaborators with others to
create an outcome that exceeds the vision of any one person. Our
curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, team problem-solving, and
creative expression in various media. We value both process and
results. We learn from challenges in order to build lifelong habits
of persistence and innovation.
