Alcohol and Other Drug Intervention Specialist/Counselor

Primary Purpose of Position:
The Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention/Intervention Specialist/Counselor provides a significant service to the campus community in relation to campus safety and to compliance with federal and state regulations. The AOD Specialist/Counselor provides and/or coordinates substance use education and awareness programming and consultation for the campus community, as well as provides assessment and intervention (both individual and group) to students experiencing difficulties with substance use and abuse. In addition, the AOD Specialist/Counselor plays a major role in the university's compliance with the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended by the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989, which requires that any institution of higher education that receives federal financial assistance adopt and implement a program to prevent the use of illicit drugs and alcohol abuse by students and employees. Pursuit to this requirement, the Department of Education General Administrative Regulations (EDGAR), mandate that colleges and universities: 1) annually distribute specified drug and alcohol prevention information to students and employees (“annual notification”), and 2) conduct a biennial review of their drug and alcohol prevention programs. Non-compliance can lead to hefty university fines. The AOD Specialist/Counselor, along with the Clery Compliance Coordinator will co-lead the compliance efforts. In addition to playing an integral role in the implementation and engagement of prevention programs presented in the annual report and the biennial review, the AOD Specialist/Counselor will assist in the development of the documents. The AOD Specialist/Counselor also serves as a liaison to community substance abuse agencies.
As a university Counselor, the AOD Specialist/Counselor also provides individual & group counseling on a variety of personal, social, education concerns and consultations to faculty and staff and other personnel inside and outside the University on student a variety of student psychological and developmental issues. Given the current heightened levels of stress and anxiety and the maladaptive ways students are responding to the current stress, having a counselor who can not only respond to the psychological needs of the general student, but also those who are developing difficulties with substance use and abuse is imperative.


Minimum Education/Experience:
Master’s degree in mental health field (e.g., clinical or counseling psychology, social work) from an accredited college or university

Specific coursework and/or post-degree training in substance abuse assessment, treatment and case management;


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Outstanding outreach/presentaton skills;

Proven ability to serve as a liaison with other departments/units/organization (e.g., Dean’s Office, community agencies);

Must possess strong substance abuse assessment skills;

Must be skilled in time-limited alcohol & other drug counseling;

Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as a emmber of a clinical team;

Excellent written and oral communication skills;

Personal professional flexibility;

Enthusiastic and outgoing professional demeanor;

General computer skills, including the use of a database.

It is expected that the succssful candidate will also keep abreast of current research and health education regarding substance abuse issues with the college student population.
