Non-tenure-track lecturers of English at Southern Utah University teach a 4/4 annual load of introductory and intermediate writing courses. They may also teach other general education or writing courses depending on qualifications, based on Departmental needs, and as determined by the Department Chairperson.

Duties and Responsibilities:

SUU values quality teaching as the primary focus of faculty efforts and activities. Lecturers of English

  1. support the mission of the general education program, as well as the writing program, which emphasizes rhetorically informed, process-based pedagogy;
  2. design their syllabi with an emphasis on outcome-based learning and High Impact Practices as defined by AAC&U;
  3. hold regular office hours (at least five per week);
  4. constructively respond to student work in a timely manner (within two weeks);
  5. attend writing program meetings and other required trainings; 
  6. participate in professional development (as determined by the Writing Program Administrator and the Department Chairperson);
  7. remain current in the practice and pedagogy of writing (which can include presenting at relevant conferences and publishing);
  8. serve on department committees; and
  9. contribute to the intellectual life of the English Department and the University.

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  1. A Master of Arts or a Master of Fine Arts in English
  2. Demonstrated success in teaching GE writing courses at the university level
  3. Familiarity with innovative pedagogical approaches, outcome-based learning, and current assessment methods
  4. Strong background in writing pedagogy as well as evidence of successful experience in teaching writing at the university level
  5. Experience teaching developmental writing preferred.
  6. Experience teaching in the public school system preferred.
  7.   Current teaching license preferred.

In accordance with Utah State Code 53B-1-110, appointment to this position is contingent upon the successful passing of a background check.
