General summary/purpose:
Launched in January 2021, Inheritance Baltimore: Humanities and Arts Education for Black Liberation is a three-year, grant-funded project situated in JHU’s Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. The project aims to direct humanities education and public engagement toward unmaking institutional white supremacy in academe and preserving black Baltimore’s creative and intellectual legacies. Inheritance Baltimore sets out to create a vibrant, community-engaged laboratory for antiracist pedagogy and research, African-centered freedom education, collaborative arts and culture curation, and black archival preservation. The project endeavors to expand educational, professional and creative opportunities for black humanities scholars, curators, archivists, artists and public intellectuals laboring within and without the academy.


Inheritance Baltimore seeks an Assistant Director of Fellowships and Community Engagement, jointly appointed between JHU’s Center for Africana Studies and the Program in Racism, Immigration, and Citizenship. The position’s responsibilities include overseeing the management of fellowships for postdoctoral scholars and practitioner-scholars (e.g.: artists, curators, archivists). Duties and responsibilities are listed below.


Specific duties & responsibilities:

Fellowships Management (45%)*
▪ Oversee selection process for Practice Fellows and Graduate Fellows
▪ Plan cultural enrichment and professional development opportunities for fellowship cohort
▪ Coordinate Fellows’ teaching responsibilities (course planning, listing, evaluation, etc.) and support Fellows as needed with syllabus development and access to pedagogical training opportunities
▪ Coordinate hiring/supervision of undergraduate assistants
▪ Implement orientation program for new Fellows
▪ Assist Director with doctoral student professionalization workshops and curriculum development at Orita’s Cross Freedom School, the management and execution of onboarding and day-to-day activities of Postdoctoral Fellows

Grant Administration (20%)
▪ Create systems for tracking expenditure of research funds, conference travel and project-related spending
▪ Generate monthly budget reports
▪ With guidance from and collaboration with the Research Integration Team, this role will:

  • Manage budgets and track spending related to fellowships program.
  • Prepare reports for other members of the leadership team and also work with Research Integration in the preparation of reports to the Mellon Foundation.


Public Engagement (20%)
▪ Assist with outreach to Baltimore community organizations and Maryland HBCUs with the aim of advancing Fellows’ community-based teaching, research, arts and archives initiatives
▪ Collaborate with the leadership team to identify opportunities and venues for showcasing public arts and humanities programming and scholarship
▪ Provide intellectual and logistical support in planning annual conferences and seminars for the partner programs – Racism, Immigration and Citizenship (RIC), and Africana Studies’ Billie Holiday Project for Liberation Arts
▪ Develop strategies for brand messaging and online visibility; supervise student workers responsible for website updates and social media

Teaching and Curriculum Support (15%)
▪ Consult with project faculty to develop and recommend courses and other curricular offerings in RIC and Africana Studies.
▪ Depending on qualifications, s/he may co-teach one freshman seminar course per year in Africana Studies, designed in collaboration with project leadership. Teaching a course would be for supplemental compensation above that of this position.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
• Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication, education management, or other related field.
• Five years of related experience.

Preferred qualifications:
• Master’s degree in a humanities or social science discipline, education management, or other related field or PhD in a humanities or social science discipline
• Nonprofit or higher education administration experience (volunteer experience may be considered)
• Experience in graduate fellowship/scholarship programs

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Knowledge of community-based learning pedagogies, critical participatory research and/or discourses of antiracism and diversity
• Comfort with public speaking and community engagement, especially in relation to African American and African Diaspora communities
• Experience conceptualizing and conducting trainings and workshops
• Excellent planning, time management, and decision-making skills
• Working knowledge of spreadsheet, database, email, calendar/scheduling, and word processing software

Preferred skills:
• Knowledge of African American history and culture, and familiarity with Baltimore City
• Budget management
• Grant writing and reporting
• Donor cultivation and fundraising strategy
• Wordpress/website editing

Supervisory responsibility (indicate the number and type of persons supervised by incumbent):

Will supervise a number of undergraduate assistants; the position will supervisor 10-12 fellows per year.

Budget authority (indicate dollar amount of budget managed and type/level of authority):

Position will be responsible for managing an annual budget of roughly $800,000.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
