Job Description:

The Department of Mathematics and Actuarial Science (MACT) is seeking an energetic team-builder to lead its Department of Mathematics and Actuarial Sciences. The department provides rigorous pedagogy in the essential foundation for all Sciences and Engineering programs, electives to the University-wide community and within MACT to Mathematics majors, as well as its applied Actuarial Science and Data Science programs. The School boasts graduate programs, Masters and Doctorates, in the Natural Sciences, Computer Sciences, Global Public Health and in Engineering, thereby providing opportunities for collaborative didactics and research. In that context, MACT welcomes applicants that are well-grounded in quantitative methodologies and analyses applicable to its three majors and diverse applications across the University, with the flexibility to participate in the curriculum across various sub-disciplines, from freshmen to graduate.

The successful candidate is an innovative and dynamic leader with demonstrated abilities who will build on departmental strengths, recruit and mentor outstanding faculty, promote scholarly initiatives and will be a strong advocate to both internal University and external constituencies.

The Department's faculty have diverse interests and expertise. As such, the successful candidate will have a vision of engagement, evidence-based decision-making and recognition of talent, to mentor, develop and advocate. The department is committed to building collaborative partnerships. Opportunities for interdisciplinary interactions and collaborations exist not only within other departments and within schools at AUC, but also with external professional entities and regional academic institutions.

The successful candidate must articulate a powerful vision for the advancement of the department's mission and goals. The department is seeking to increase its stature and reputation while maintaining its culture of instructional excellence. As such, in collaboration with the departmental faculty, other chair colleagues, the dean and relevant stakeholders, the Chair will oversee recruitment efforts, assist in the development of curricula, make recommendations to the Dean regarding all programmatic and personnel matters including evaluation of programs, faculty and staff, prepares schedule of classes, and administer all departmental budgets.

Applicants should be committed to excellence in teaching and learning as well as demonstrating a strong research record (senior faculty). Preference will be given to applicants who will contribute to the Department, School, University, and the outside communities in the department's represented fields. English is required as it is the language of instruction at AUC. Research opportunities within the School of Sciences and Engineering and with colleagues across AUC are strongly encouraged.

Requirements:

Candidates for this position will have an earned doctorate holding a PhD in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Data Science or a related field and a level of stature in the field sufficient at a minimum to merit tenure-eligible appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in this essential department. Highly desirable qualities include an understanding of the current needs and future directions of the field of mathematics and quantitative sciences and related areas in general, as well as within the department and school, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, pedagogical and personnel, and skills in academic leadership, student relations, mentoring, industrial and alumni relations.
