Description

The Department of Music at Smith College invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Choral Activities (ADCA) and Lecturer in Music, to begin July 2021. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, two-year position, with the possibility of renewal for a third and final year. A Master's degree is required by the time of appointment.

The successful candidate will teach Introduction to Choral Singing, a class for students with little to no singing experience. In collaboration with the Director of Choral Activities, the ADCA will conduct the Glee Club and Chamber Singers regularly in rehearsal and in concert. Other responsibilities may include teaching musicianship sections associated with theory courses, giving private voice lessons, teaching an introductory course for non-majors, and other duties assigned by the department chair. The ADCA has administrative responsibility in areas such as, but not limited to, concert planning and production, management of course materials, and student mentoring. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with colleagues and student leaders.

For decades, the ADCA has been a unique opportunity for pre-doctoral conductors. Previous holders have gone on to significant careers in the field. The position provides an opportunity to learn how to run a high achieving choral program with the guidance of a senior mentor.
