The Whitman Career Center is seeking a Career Advisor to deliver career education and professional development programming, services, and resources for graduate business students. The Career Advisor will work to understand career interests and partner in developing strategies to support internship and full-time job search for MBA and MS students across all full-time master’s programs and concentrations.
The Career Advisor will have the responsibility to coordinate and manage large-scale professional development programs, including educational and recruiting events, industry-specific corporate visits and alumni networking programs.
The Career Advisor must have or develop an understanding of trends and best practices in master’s education and career development, while also being familiar with the needs of an international student population, the work authorization processes for international candidates, and opportunities within STEM fields.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who evaluates student and corporate partner needs, develops strategies, and proactively takes appropriate action as a result. The Career Advisor is responsible for tracking, auditing, and analyzing internship and placement outcomes with high attention to detail and accountability.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of previous career counseling, recruiting, or placement experience preferred. Master’s degree highly desirable. Experience with the unique needs of business students helpful.
Job Specific Qualifications
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills required.
Previous experience in career services advising across a diverse population of students is highly desirable.
Must have the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and successfully manage multiple demands and priorities.
High capacity to meet deadlines, well-developed time management and organizational skills, and discretion in handling confidential information. Intermediate level technology skills required in Excel, database management, and online platforms required.
Ability to work occasional evening and weekends (career fairs, employer visits, events), and travel for student events and conferences.
Responsibilities
Coaching, Advising, Teaching, and Training: Provide career counseling, advising, and coaching to global, diverse, and discerning full-time graduate business student population (e.g., career research, resume and cover letter writing, internship and job search strategy, interview preparation, and networking tips). Develop and implement unique career education programming for Whitman graduate student population utilizing career development theories and modern methodologies. Lead one-on-one and group sessions with students to facilitate skill development and exploration of opportunities; have or gain knowledge of related industries and career paths as well as skills needed for graduate students. Deliver information in person, virtually, and through online resources based on best practices while addressing emerging student needs. Evaluate gaps in student engagement and skillsets; create and execute plans to establish connections with student population and equip students with necessary competencies.
Innovation and Strategy: Think creatively and proactively about professional development and career search experience for students. Pilot innovative approaches for building partnerships and engaging with students and employers with a mindset for understanding the needs of an international student population, the work authorization process for international candidates, and opportunities within STEM fields. Demonstrate excellent analytical skills while evaluating and impacting program needs.
Relationship Development: Collaborate with faculty, alumni, students, and employers to foster relationships while building learning and recruiting opportunities for Whitman students
