Job Description
The Eagle Flight Research Center (EFRC) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is looking for an Engineering Project Manager. An entrepreneurial and flexible self-starter with a high energy level and a system engineering mindset to guide students and other staff/faculty through various research projects is desired. Strong experience and engagement with the development and implementation of effective systems engineering methods is required.
The EFRC serves as the university’s Aerospace Research & Design facility. The state-of-the-art center is equipped to conduct a variety of projects, including: experimental flight testing, aircraft modifications for FAA certification, design and testing of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), development and verification of high-fidelity (up to Level D) flight-data models used in engineering and training simulators and prototype engineering solutions to advance eco-friendly alternatives in aviation. Qualifications
Project Design and Development Requirements:
- The ability to envision a product or design in its entirety and communicate this vision to team members.
- Engineering experience to support the layout of prints for outside manufacture, proofing, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and release.
- Demonstrated ability to identify, manage, allocate, and derive hardware and software requirements that span the aircraft system life cycle; to understand, develop, and implement Interface Control Documents (ICD); to understand mechanical and electrical designs and drawings.
- Ability to manage a system technical baseline, systems requirements definition and review (SRR), systems preliminary design and baseline trades (PDR), systems detailed design (CDR), integration and test activities (I&T), chair flight readiness reviews (FRR).
- Skills and knowledge related to feature-based 3D CAD tools like SolidWorks or CATIA is desired.
Communication Requirements:
- Highly effective technical writing and oral presentation skills
- Must have basic knowledge with programs such as:
- Outlook Calendar, Planner, When2Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams
- Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Ability to define and manage project requirements in DOORS, JIRA, or similar tools
- Must be able to network with University contacts and outside contractors, consultants, and vendors for project stability and success.
Purchasing/Budgeting Requirements:
- Must be comfortable with obtaining accurate quotes and following University procurement procedures.
- Must have basic budgeting knowledge to ensure project purchases remain within an outlined and approved budget.
Safety Requirements:
- Lead the definition of system development plans
- Create system development, risk, and mitigation plans
- Develop test hazards
Marketing Requirements:
- Must be able to market the EFRC through projects to ensure consistent contract and grant funds. This may include website support, PR suggestions and coordination, and customer contact.
- Will need to work with University staff to arrange facility improvements. This could be capital projects or other building enhancements inside or outside to match required capabilities and requirements for current and future projects – this will continue to put the EFRC at the top of the innovation list.
Other Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree (MS) in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace engineering is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of engineering management experience with team sizes of 5+ staff.
- Able to travel and provide hands on support for aircraft development activities.
- Business hours except for travel and occasional extended shift meetings and research testing.
