Under the broad direction of the Deputy Director of External Affairs, and reporting to the Associate Director for Museum Development, this position supports RISD Museum engagement initiatives, events, and retention. This is an ideal opportunity for an emerging professional interested in a museum or non-profit development career and the roles museums play in an increasingly diverse society.

The Membership Engagement Coordinator is responsible for coordinating, implementing, and analyzing a broad-based membership program to provide unrestricted support for Museum activities within the context of a comprehensive development plan. Applying a strong sense of customer service, this position recommends, and implements, as approved, policies and procedures to support programs, maintain accurate records, and communicate with members at all levels. The Membership Engagement Coordinator actively collaborates with Museum colleagues to ensure the efficient and effective coordination of data and content needed for various External Affairs print and electronic publications.

Essential Functions

Membership Program Coordination

  • Coordinate membership appeal and renewal programs from the Museum’s database of record to help meet annual revenue goals from individuals and member institutions.

  • Provide input related to the development of diversified strategies in support of a comprehensive membership and engagement program, and implement strategies as approved.

  • Work collaboratively with other development and marketing staff to ensure a cohesive and thoughtful approach toward implementing promotions, enhancing the visitor experience, and increasing visitor conversion.

  • Develop and prepare copy, content, and materials for publications.

  • Manage member@risd.edu email account. Manage data requests and maintain the integrity of donor and member financial records.



Events & Communications

  • Plan and manage annual calendar of membership renewals and events, which includes two membership orientations, the annual Membership Update, and member trips.

  • Support additional development events, including but not limited to cultivation and museum-hosted interdepartmental events, through concept development, invitation management, logistical support, and staffing, as requested.





Stewardship and Reporting

  • Prepare a wide variety of standard and ad-hoc reports to measure results of membership campaigns, and overall membership retention and growth.

  • Monitor progress towards revenue goals and provide reports for senior management.

  • Develop stewardship materials and content that conveys the impact of annual programs to relevant audiences.

  • Contribute content for museum news and events, website, and brochures, and mailings for all campaigns.



Knowledge/Skills/Experience

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Prior membership or customer relations experience and experience with fundraising databases or CRM systems preferred. The incumbent must enjoy working with the public and possess strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate persuasively through a variety of mediums. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact and build relationships with donors and members, corporate and institutional partners, and general audiences. Must demonstrate sensitivity to individuals of varying backgrounds, including but not limited to, racial, ethnic, religious, gender, cultural, ability, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic. Strong time management skills. Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail and under deadlines. Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and other technologies (such as Zoom, Google Suite of programs, etc.).
