The Coordinator of Service-Learning and Student Engagement assumes primary responsibility for CSEI service-learning and community engagement programs. The coordinator will work with campus stakeholders to establish and organize a robust service-learning approach that will include outreach and support for faculty service-learning in the classroom, supports for students who are participating in service-learning experiences, and development of effective practices and procedures for high-impact service-learning, with a goal of effectively capturing and expanding service-learning opportunities and off-campus service-learning hours completed by students. 

Oversight of Community-based Educational Opportunities and Service-Learning Initiatives

Lead a campus effort to develop stronger service-learning initiatives which increase students’ understanding of their role within their communities and provide opportunities that connect classroom and real-world. Collaborate with and provide supports for faculty to strengthen and implement service-learning courses. Provide administrative support, craft opportunities for reflection, and track student engagement and learning outcomes. Support the expansion of the Community Development Fellows program as a signature service-learning opportunity for all students; assist in student fellow recruitment, site matching, and maintaining a database of opportunities. Develop an intentional service-learning alternative break program. Ensure that service-learning opportunities reflect best practices in risk management, data collection, and reflection. Maintain partnerships with non-profits and other community agencies; write and submit grants and other funding requests; lead the development of Memoranda of Understanding; and coordinate communication between the university and its partners.

Development of Community Engagement and Service Programs

Facilitate growth and development of major community engagement initiatives including Community Service Day, UB Day to Serve, and Mount Royal Trick-or-Treat. Oversee food security initiatives such as the Campus Pantry and Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Select and train Pantry student staff and volunteers. Oversee funding and supply of Pantry, including fundraising.

Development of Data and Reporting on University Community Engagement Efforts 

Create a clearinghouse for campus service and service-learning initiatives including courses, volunteers, service hours, learning outcomes, and community partnerships. Assess and compile community needs and interests to assist in the development of strategic partnerships. Utilize data to build and deliver reports on civic engagement. Work with institutional stakeholders and university marketing and creative services to gather and disseminate relevant data through timely, accurate, and compelling reports and collaterals. Leverage tools and resources to assist in obtaining grants, AmeriCorps VISTA positions, and special designations such as the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, Campus Compact awards, and the President’s Higher Education Honor Roll.

University Outreach 

Conduct outreach with university partners, community members, and stakeholders, including student volunteers, community-based organizations, and campus and community partners. Represent the University of Baltimore and CSEI, and serve as an advocate for students on a variety of divisional and university committees.

Policy Development and Implementation

Assist in the development and implementation of service-learning and civic engagement policies and procedures. Perform timely reviews of policies to ensure compliance with all university, state and federal requirements; revise policies and procedures as necessary. Provide recommendations to university officials regarding current student policy and processes. Address concerns and policy violations in compliance with established university procedures. 

Special Work Hours

This position is responsible for assisting in supervising select evening and weekend programs, including facility operations, informal activities, off campus events, and assigned programs. Must have the ability to work a flexible daily routine to include evening and weekend hours.

Required Education and Experience

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in education, psychology, sociology, public administration, business, management, or other related field.

Experience: 3 years of experience in in service-learning, civic engagement, student life, or related field.

Ability to work a flexible daily routine to include evening and weekend hours. Note: master’s degree may substitute for up to two years of experience.

Preferred Education and Experience 

Education: Master’s Degree in Counseling/Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel Services, or a related field.

Experience: 3-5 years of experience in student service-learning, civic engagement, community partnerships, or related field. Experience with developing new partnerships with non-profit organizations and community stakeholders. Skills in assessment of learning, leading reflection, and building course materials. Skills in developing quality reports and coordinating messaging around university-wide efforts. Skills in facilitating student- and faculty-facing trainings, educational sessions and medium-to-large scale events. Proficiency in the use of social media and other marketing tools to create, manage, and update an electronic presence.
