Senior Director, Sustainability and Energy Management

The Division of Operations is seeking candidates for a Senior Director of Sustainability and Energy Management.

The department of Sustainability and Energy Management resides within the Division of Operations at The College of New Jersey. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Operations, the Senior Director of this department will provide the strategic and tactical leadership to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of the TCNJ Central Utility Plant and Energy Management System. The Senior Director will develop and lead the TCNJ Strategic Sustainability Plan in collaboration with the Environmental Sustainability Council, the Office of the President, the Faculty Senate, the Staff Senate, and Student Government.

The Senior Director will create a strategy to integrate sustainability principles into the operational functions of the College.  This includes improving programs in energy conservation and emissions reporting; beginning at the project planning phase, through construction, and in facility operations. The Senior Director will be responsible for:  increasing the environmental efficiency of purchasing practices; expanding the reach of recycling and waste reduction; identifying opportunities for grant funding, rebates, or other savings programs; and evaluating proposals for technical feasibility, cost effectiveness, and acceptability by the TCNJ community.  The Senior Director will monitor and measure such initiatives and work with other units to publicize, promote, and communicate TCNJ’s sustainability efforts to internal and external audiences.

The Senior Director of Sustainability and Energy Management will develop, manage and implement best practices for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Central Utility Plant for the delivery of shared utility services to the TCNJ campus.  The Senior Director will lead and be responsible for the staff assigned to the Central Utility Plant including licensed engineers and TCNJ employed specialists in Mechanical Equipment, Energy Systems and Building Automation.  The Senior Director will develop, maintain and be responsible for Departmental budgets including the TCNJ utility commodity expenses and sales, utility purchasing and payment, and capital and operating maintenance.

Required Experience:

1. Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, management, science, or related field; with an environmental focus
2. Minimum of four years’ experience implementing environmental, energy or sustainability programs
3. Ability to build consensus across large, diverse stakeholder groups. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with public speaking and publication-ready writing skills required.
4. Experience with managing ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager accounts.
5. Experience with large, complex utilities production and distribution including combined heat and power plants required.
6. Documented experience with energy, water and waste conservation in buildings

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

• Experience in a college or university environment; understanding of environmental best practices in higher education;
• LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional;
• CEM (Certified Energy Manager);
• Master’s degree in engineering, architecture, management, science, or related field; with an environmental focus;
• Experience completing AASHE STARS inventory and other sustainability metrics.
