General summary/purpose:

Reports to supervisor and is responsible for the overall daily operation of departmental laboratories, inventory, and equipment maintenance. Coordinates with electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and facilities management for work in the labs. Maintains department equipment; -80˚, -40˚ and -20˚ degree freezers, freezer alarm systems, autoclaves, centrifuges, incubators, microbeta counters, motors, vacuum pumps, cell presses, NMR, etc.). Monitors storage areas (on- and off-site storage units). Monitors radiation, biomedical, and hazardous waste disposal. Assists Administrative Manager with department space and equipment inventories. Assists Administrative Manager with laboratory safety inspections, lab renovations, and assists in the development and revision of lab policies and procedures.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Responsible for upkeep and maintenance on laboratory equipment (-80˚, -40˚ and -20˚ degree freezers, freezer alarm systems, refrigerators, autoclaves, centrifuges, incubators, microbeta counters, motors, vacuum pumps, cell presses, NMR, etc.).
  • Be available to address departmental emergency maintenance issues on call and assist maintenance staff with departmental maintenance problems during emergencies.
  • Manage on- and off-site storage areas, chemical storage area, liquid nitrogen storage, waste and radiation room, and manage departmental maintenance shop.
  • Monitor waste disposal (biomedical, radiation, hazardous). Collect and take chemicals to storage area for disposal, and manage department’s liquid nitrogen tank fillings.
  • Set up departmental conference rooms for seminars and meetings, and maintain and repair audio/visual equipment in departmental conference rooms.
  • Help to coordinate and prepare laboratories for the annual equipment inventory and laboratory safety walk through with Safety Officers. Oversee all corrections.
  • Coordinate/oversee work of electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and facilities management work in labs.
  • Assist the Administrative Manager with coordinating and overseeing departmental renovation projects.
  • Place service calls on departmental autoclave and schedule back-up freezer usage.
  • Manage, inspect, and install equipment after it has been delivered. Check to make sure equipment is functioning properly.


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 5 years of relevant experience including building maintenance, safety compliance, building management and customer service.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Technical School Training.
  • Prior experience working in an academic setting is preferred.


Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Ability to adapt to difficult emergency situations and think creatively to mitigate operational impacts.
  • Ability to “manage without authority,” coordinating/directing other University personnel and outside contractors to respond efficiently during construction, repair, maintenance, and emergency response efforts.
  • Ability to handle faculty, student, and staff complaints and requests with a respectful, constructive, helpful, and professional attitude, even under extreme pressure.
  • Ability to monitor construction activity to provide feedback to Administrative Manager and Department Director on contractor performance.
  • Ability to quickly master safety and enforce all safety and compliance protocols, including:
    • OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, federal)
    • ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act, federal)
    • Fire Marshal (local)
    • OHS (Occupational Health and Safety office, JHU)
    • HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment, JHU)
    • OIE (Office of Institutional Equity, JHU)
    • All other University, local, state, and federal protocols
  • Broad/General knowledge of building systems, including:
    • Mechanical/HVAC
    • Plumbing
    • Electrical
    • Structural
    • Carpentry
    • Painting
    • Locksmith
    • Housekeeping/Custodial Services


Any specific physical requirements for the job:

Ability to physically self-perform basic carpentry, maintenance, and emergency response tasks, including:

  • Moving large equipment on pallet jacks
  • Miscellaneous assembly and disassembly tasks
  • Furniture assembly and disassembly
  • Breaking down crates, boxes, etc.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
