Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

VCU School of Nursing is seeking a Lab & Research Specialist. The overall goal of this position is to provide support in lab research, such as carrying out molecular biology techniques/experiments, and maintaining laboratory supplies, equipment and the data generated from lab
experiments.

The primary purpose of this 3 year R01 funded project is to carry out protein assays, PCR, DNA methylation and other general molecular bench experiments on multiple sample types, with a focus on at least 16 different primary and/or secondary cell lines in scaled volumes. Specific project assignments may change as priorities of the laboratory change.

Minimum Hiring Standards

-Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to get along with, and communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing), with the project PI, project team members and other laboratory personnel.

-Detailed oriented, highly organized, good math skills.

-Previous laboratory experience in basic cell and molecular biology and biochemical techniques is essential.

-Must be able to perform standard molecular biology techniques such as RNA and DNA isolation, qPCR, and varied protein assays.

-Excellent organizational skills and good lab notebook documentation are required.

-Must have ability to troubleshoot problems and ability to interpret data.

-Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and data entry and analysis in Excel.

-Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

MS degree preferred, with 2+ years of molecular biology and biochemistry experience. Ability to analyze genetic and protein data and import files into Excel is preferred.
