The Division of Communication, Computer Science and English at Southwestern College seeks a versatile colleague for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant or associate professor with teaching and scholarly or creative interests in journalism and/or digital storytelling. The appointment begins August 2021.

The main responsibility of the successful candidate is to develop and cultivate a vision for a successful convergent journalism program that fits within a liberal arts perspective as well as the interdisciplinary nature of the division, and serves the larger academic vision and mission of the college. The communication department is committed to preparing our students for careers in communication by creating an educational environment that values diverse people and their ideas. Our new colleague will be expected to teach undergraduate courses for both journalism and communication majors to prepare them to communicate with a variety of audiences. Likely courses will include:

  • media writing
  • editing and design
  • digital/visual storytelling, including photography
  • media law and ethics
  • oral communication
  • other courses within the candidate’s area of expertise

Additional responsibilities:

  • advise the online news site and the campus radio and television station
  • consult with the division chair on the operation the equipment room
  • work collaboratively within the division and across the campus to create innovative academic opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in mass communication, English, or digital media preferred
  • Significant professional experience a plus
  • Master’s degree in communication or journalism required
  • additional experience in creative writing is an advantage
  • demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching
  • active pursuit of scholarly research and professional development opportunities
  • ability to incorporate relevant experiences into instruction
  • strong verbal and written communication skills
