The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) invites nominations and applications for Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) and Founding Director of the College's new School of Health and Clinical Sciences. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the College. 

UDC's mission and strategic vision support its designation as an urban public land-grant and historically black college and university (HBCU). UDC is the Capital's only public institution of higher learning. Founded in 1851, the University has a student population of 3,200; it comprises the flagship campus, the University of the District of Columbia Community College with 21 associate degrees and several certificate programs, and the David A. Clarke School of Law. Over 200 full-time and approximately 300 adjunct or visiting faculty guide students in 81 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Public Administration, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and in CAUSES.

CAUSES offers degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. levels. The Land-Grant Programs of CAUSES provide research-based community education and professional certification programs delivered through five centers and three institutes: the Center for Urban Agriculture and Gardening Education; the Center for Sustainable Development and Resilience, which includes the Water Resources Research Institute; the Center for 4-H and Youth Development; the Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health, which includes the Institute of Gerontology; and the Center for Architectural Innovation and Building Science, which includes the Architectural Research Institute. The College oversees UDC's 143-acre Firebird Farm and four award-winning Urban Food Hubs operating in the District of Columbia.

The new School of Health and Clinical Sciences will afford the ideal candidate a singularly unique, intellectual, and meaningful opportunity to bring a vision to life. The position will be demanding and require deep interdisciplinary engagement with the academic enterprise, reaching across disciplines with a clear, collaborative voice. The Associate Dean must have the ability to focus on a future for the university, its students, and the District of Columbia through the School with exciting academic and service programs, strengthening and expanding existing programs, creating new offerings in health and community well-being professions, and elevating the University to national prominence as it addresses health inequities and social determinants of health. The School of Health and Clinical Sciences promises to be a regional leader and national model for high-quality education, research, and innovation in 21st-century health and clinical sciences.

The Associate Dean will bring a purposeful, thoughtful vision to the office, working diligently with internal and external stakeholders on behalf of UDC’s mission, vision, and values. This leader will be an accomplished strategic planner at all levels and inspire the development of distinctive health and clinical science programs. The Associate Dean will work to create collaborative partnerships across the University and with external organizations to support students' growth and education in the School.

As the principal advocate for the School of Health and Clinical Sciences, the Associate Dean will promote excellence in teaching and have sound knowledge of certification and accreditation standards in support of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (RN-to-BSN), accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing; the Didactic Program in Dietetics, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics; and CAUSES' architecture programs, accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

The selected candidate must be a decisive, skilled, and insightful administrator of the highest integrity with the capacity to manage differences of opinion creatively and constructively. The Associate Dean also will provide forward-thinking and imaginative leadership in the recruitment and retention of all students in CAUSES, with special emphasis on students enrolled in the School of Health and Clinical Sciences.

QUALIFICATIONS

• A terminal degree in a discipline related to the new School or College;
• Five years of academic leadership with budget management authority;
• Experience in strategic planning, accreditation, and development of new programs;
• Knowledge of curriculum development, outcomes assessment, problem-based learning, and interprofessional education;
• Superb communicator as a speaker, writer, and listener;
• Fiscal and budgetary experience for development, oversight, and management of departmental/program budgets;
• Ability to provide leadership for development of new resources and relationships to advance the School's vision;
• Proven success with grants, grant processes, and fundraising;
• A relationships builder with ability to unite and inspire administrators, faculty, staff, community stakeholders, and students; and
• Commitment to working in diverse settings and supporting inclusive working and learning environments.
