Social Studies Teaching is an interdisciplinary, professional education program. Students in the program are prepared to attain a Minnesota social studies teaching license for middle/secondary (grades 5-12). The program is designed as a broad field social studies teaching major with a commitment to interdisciplinary study of human behavior and society using multiple perspective and tools of scientific analysis through an integrated approach using insights from economic, geographical, historical, political, psychological and sociological dimensions, as well as from other areas such as the natural sciences and humanities.

 

With Social Studies Teaching as the core, the position provides leadership and facilitates collaboration for this program across the multiple disciplinary areas of study and among the various departments involved, including the Secondary Education program in the School of Education. The roster placement for the position will depend on the academic preparation of the candidate. The position will teach in the Social Studies Teaching program and may also teach in the Secondary Education program and in the appropriate disciplinary unit as qualified. The position will provide leadership and facilitate collaboration in initial license program coordination, curriculum development, integration of content and pedagogy, processes of continuous improvement, assessment, accreditation, development of graduate level offerings, and teacher professional development. Additionally, the position will advise and mentor students, supervise teacher candidates in field and student teaching clinical placements, and develop partnership relationships with our PK-12 school district colleagues. The position will develop a research/scholarship agenda, pursue scholarly and/or creative activities, participate in program and/or departmental operation and enhancement and perform service to the program/department, the school, and the University community – including participation in and leadership on committees, and in other faculty duties as assigned. The position will contribute to a collegial, supportive, anti-racist, and social justice-oriented environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in a disciplinary area associated with the SST program, Education, or Social Studies Education. (ABD considered, but doctorate must be completed on or before start date of employment.)
  • Depending on doctoral preparation, must meet additional minimum qualifications as required by the MN Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) (e.g. minimum 18 credits of graduate-level work in an SST related content area).
  • Must have held or currently hold a professional teaching license in Social Studies Teaching.
  • Must have completed a state-approved educator preparation program OR published peer-reviewed research in the content area of instruction.
  • 3 years minimum experience as teacher of record at the middle or secondary school level in social studies.
  • 3 years successful teaching in a university setting.
  • Record of scholarly achievement, which may include successful grant activity.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully design and deliver courses/programs in multiple modalities (in-person, hybrid/hyflex, synchronous/asynchronous online).
  • Demonstrated ability to teach using student-centered pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated leadership with curriculum development, program development, assessment, or processes of continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated successful experience implementing an educator performance assessment.
  • Evidence of leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Evidence of demonstrated effective ability to teach and work with persons from minoritized/marginalized communities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Holds or can attain a Minnesota professional teaching license in appropriate content area and age band.
  • Experience advising/mentoring graduate students including support with culminating projects/thesis development.
  • Demonstrated successful experiences working with multilingual learners.
  • Demonstrated record of writing and scholarly activities related to content education, pedagogical content knowledge, or content education for multilingual learners.
  • Experience in supervision of clinical field placements and/or student teaching.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum writing showing alignment amongst state standards, edTPA (or other teacher performance assessment) requirements, and public school teaching needs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional coaching strategies for adult learners.
