The Lucas Lab (https://chemistry.vcu.edu/people/faculty/lucas.html) within the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University has two NIH -funded postdoctoral positions available for enthusiastic and skilled scientists. Candidates with expertise in the biochemical and biophysical characterization of proteins, and those who have a genuine passion for understanding the role of metals in biological systems and processes are encouraged to apply. The principal research focus will be on elucidating the structural features and the biochemical mechanisms of amyloidogenic proteins implicated in Parkinson’s disease, with an emphasis on metal-mediated structural dynamics, neurochemistry, and the biochemical and/or redox modification of these aggregation-prone proteins. Candidates will have an opportunity to contribute to a comprehensive research project, and individual responsibilities may be dedicated to light scattering techniques (such as SEC - MALS ); utilization of advanced imaging platforms (such as TEM, AFM, or cryo-EM); and/or implementation of mammalian cell culture and/or DNA manipulation. Candidates will also be required to routinely support the preparation of proteins through cell culture expression (bacterial and mammalian), chromatographic protein purification ( FPLC ) and separations (gels, blots, etc.), as well as a variety of analytical techniques (fluorescence, LSPR, EPR, CD, multiplexed immunoassays, etc.).The successful candidate will be expected to independently execute and analyze experiments, to contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, and to promote a collegial and rigorous laboratory environment. Periodic technical progress reports will be required, and opportunities to mentor graduate and undergraduate students will be available. The initial appointment is for one year with a review after 6 months; renewal beyond 1 year is contingent on milestones achieved.

Required Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biophysics, or a related discipline.

Must be able to work in a diverse work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidates will have a demonstrated skill set in some of the techniques described, and the level of expertise, familiarity and/or interest should be mentioned in the candidate’s cover letter and/or CV. Opportunities to learn and to be trained in new techniques and/or methodologies will be available; however, candidates with specialized training in redox biology, structural biology, molecular physiology, and/or biophysics are highly sought.
