Job Description:

Basic Function:

The director will reestablish the Center for Teaching and Learning by collaborating with faculty and staff to encourage and support teaching excellence and student success across the University. The director develops programming and resources responsive to faculty needs and advances pedagogical innovation on campus. In partnership with a faculty advisory committee, the CTL supports faculty development (in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service) for all members of the Teaching Faculty (full-time/part-time, tenure-track/non-tenure-track) at all career stages, including training of new and adjunct faculty.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Professional/Academic

  • Support approximately 125 full-time and 300 part-time faculty; instructors of in-person, online, and hybrid courses within the undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs
  • Plan and implement faculty development events (workshops, roundtables, communities of practice, retreats, faculty cohorts, one-on-one consultations, faculty lunch series, etc.) tailored to varying levels of mastery, from basic introductions to those focused on depth of knowledge and classroom implementation
  • Assist faculty members with course development, assessment, and revision, upon request
  • Curate a resource library
  • Remain current in knowledge of higher ed best practices, attend professional conferences, establish/maintain contacts in similar positions at other institutions
  • At the request of faculty, conduct teaching observations and provide confidential feedback
  • Provide support for existing faculty mentoring program, new-hire faculty orientation, technology trainings
  • Promote and incentivize participation in faculty development and recognize teaching excellence
  • Teach up to one course per semester


Culture of Collaboration

  • Proactively connect with faculty, listen, and assess needs of individuals, departments, and programs
  • Identify and empower faculty leaders/experts (in areas of pedagogy, service, scholarship, assessment, accessibility, technology, community engaged learning, interdisciplinary teaching, etc.) to assist with planning and implementation of CTL programming
  • Meet regularly with the Advisory Committee on Faculty Development, composed of full-time faculty members and representatives of the Library and the Office of Information Technology, as appointed by the Provost
  • Work collaboratively with other campus partners:
    • Assistant Director for Assessment and Institutional Research
    • Office of Information Technology, including LMS Manager
    • Academic Advising
    • Library staff
    • Grants Officer
    • Office for Mission Integration and the Mercy Center
    • Writing Center
    • Academic Center for Excellence
    • Faculty Director of Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry
    • Faculty Director of Community Engaged Learning


Administrative

  • Report to Dean of Undergraduate Studies
  • Manage CTL budget
  • Support:
    • University mission
    • University policies, programs
    • diversity, inclusion, equity
  • Assess needs for software licenses or other teaching resources and communicate these needs to the appropriate offices for budget consideration
  • Analyze data collected by various offices and use to inform programming (e.g.: LMS usage, IT tickets, course evaluations)



Requirements:

  • Terminal degree, open discipline
  • Strong knowledge of current and emerging research-supported best practices in the scholarship of teaching and learning, assessment, and faculty mentoring
  • Familiarity with current trends in educational technology, open access educational resources, and digital scholarship
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, collaboration/collegiality
  • Ability to think creatively, trouble-shoot and problem solve
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching in a higher education setting
  • Experience working with a Center for Teaching and Learning
  • Familiarity with Accessibility/Universal Design for Learning, Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973


Preferred Qualifications:

Prior leadership experience in faculty development, including training/mentoring of faculty or other professionals
Engagement in curriculum design
Research experience in the scholarship of teaching and learning
